I demoed this just to see how exactly it worked; I did not think I needed a new transient shaper.

Welp, it basically added the finishing touches to a drum buss I've been tweaking and stressing over forever.

I'm sure it's possible to recreate that using other tools. But I figured, would I pay $19 to finish this track once and for all, and get a useful tool in the process? I caved.

would this replace easily the SPL Transient Designer?

I felt like I got very mixed results when I tried it (on sort of plucky synth sounds). I found it easy to make transients sound really choppy and awful (whether boosting or cutting the first two stages), and generally had a better time with compressors or limiters. I had better results from disabling the first three stages and only using Air to boost/cut the reverb tails.

Maybe I just chose the worst case sort of sound to use it with and it's better for drums etc.

I downloaded and installed this and tried it out on a variety of drum, vocal, and synth clips in Ableton Live 12. I mapped the XY pad to the attack and decay parameters. It is really a cool plugin and easy to understand. It does a nice job in a really nicely intuitive UI. I was happy to see all the parameters were exposed for automation. I got a crossgrade price of $19 for it so I will probably end up getting it after my 14 evaluation period expires. It is definitely best for things like drums based on my playing around with it but you can do some nice things moving things in and out of the mix by playing with the release timing on things like vocals.

Seems very fair for such a powerful tool.

I will grab this for sure. The demos show incredible potential for shaping sounds.

There's probably only so much that can be gotten out of a sound.

It seems is some kind of spectral enveloping/compression tool. Some of the drum examples are great, but you'd expect to be able to boost a sound with a low level bass element to it. A pluck may just be more limited in its range of spectral content.

The stages of the envelope also may be dialled in for specific frequency ranges.

I was hoping this was a little more envelopey
myself. Still, I will pick it up for drums and whatnot. Only $19…

I would be happy if he would make a dedicated advanced low pass gate plugin…

Already used it with great success on a drum loop. I like how simple it is; an adsr envelope, which works as you'd expect. Don't have another plugin that could do that, at least not without a ton of tweaking.

Also better cpu and less glitchy than other newfangled plugins on my system.

Post

Tried it but couldn't find a situation where I felt like it improved anything. I use a lot of drum machine samples so maybe it's not really suited for that or the kind of music I make.

For those who've tried it, does it work for de-essing? (have been looking at apulsoft splits, but if this can do something similar... :))

similar universe but very different. you should download the demos and have a go at your specific use case and see whats what.

Finally!!! It's unfortunate I didn't hear about this release until now since I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for a simple yet effective single band transient processor. NONE sounded right as far as I'm concerned; until now! I'm aware Punctuate & Oeksound Spiff can yield good results but those are more complex/time consuming to tweak and much more CPU intensive.
It's bugged me for so long because I've known the tech to create a good single band transient processor has been there for at least a decade, and Newfangled being the one to finally do it is no surprise. The additional control of the envelope is really nice and well implemented. I'll be using this on just about every mix buss from now on. Thank you Newfangled! Hope they remove iLok though :)

im loving this thing. newfangled has become one of my only auto-buy developers, they’ve put out so many home runs in the last few years and my template has their plugins all over it. this isn’t the sort of thing i would expect many people to really consider using presets with, for obvious reasons.. however i was curious to see what ways the side chain was being implemented… there’s some clever ideas there i hadn’t really considered, at least a few of those presets really gave me some new ways to look at this thing. i definitely recommend at least checking out the side chain stuff in the presets library if you’re like me and had doubts on how useful that feature really could be.

as for SPL, there's this...

+1 for just how well Articulate works for tracks that need it, and in general how well designed and intuitive it is. NFA is one of the few forward thinking (and delivering) devs, great stuff. Elevate continues to lead the pack for the 2Bus here as well.

but it is a better transient shaper for drums than others?
