What do you want from Reason 13.5 or 14?

I don’t think so. The vst market is saturated with very good offerings. How many new users would go to RRP ? RRP sure is (was ?) favoured by « before switching to DAW / vst » Reason users but otherwise who has an interest in a high priced low featured vst (no midi learn, constrained UIs, bad UX with few to no facilities like copy paste between « modules »(osc, env, lfo…) inside of a device…) ?arcy wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 1:52 pm I have the sensation that Reason at some point will be only a VST rack...

I think they should consider picking up some inspiration from Bitwig regarding modulation.
With CV and modularity there is plenty of options, but the virtual rack cabling makes it inelegant and time consuming. Maybe they could add it as a Player device since they seem to love those.

it depends on the genre you play...for complex ambient and generative music the reason rack could be a mess...but for emulate hardware for basic studio operation could be fun..also in Bitwig the grid and the little device bar below the sequencer could be a mess when modulations become complicated..loungepanda wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 8:35 am I think they should consider picking up some inspiration from Bitwig regarding modulation.

CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

I hate to break my memeposts only policy but here we go.
Firstly - there is never gonna be a Reason 14, not in any meaningful way. R13 was just a highly controversial browser update really. Reason 14 - if it ever comes out at all - will be a similar bunch of nothing.
Reason Rack standalone is never going to be a desirable product. It's obvious that the PE company hoped to abandon the DAW and sell a Soundtoys / Omnisphere / Komplete competitor, but nobody needs a collection of early 2000's plugins for 500 dollars.
What made Reason good was it's unique feel, not the quality of any particular devices. Reason could still be great, and it doesn't need to be super full-featured like Cubase. As someone else said the "basic multitrack" concept works really well for the Reason paradigm - the hands-on feeling sets it apart from other DAWs. If only it was properly updated with quality of life stuff it still might attract users. They could capitalize on the fashion for modular synths and MPCs - after all, Reason "feels" like those. They could easily go back and upgrade all the old devices to modern specs while keeping compatibility, go through the major sequencer/QOL requests and so on, but that would mean working without any obvious visible new devices to advertise. It is much easier to keep churning out extremely mid devices that nobody really needed.
But this is all irrelevant anyway, because Reason has been fading away in the end of life care home for several years now. Enjoy what you have.

it's not necessary to release some QOL features with a major update...it could be a minor release, like 13.x that could be make happy a lot of user and THEN develop new "nobody needs" device for marketing purpose in some next 13.5 or 14 release...wibblywobblywomble wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 11:11 am They could easily go back and upgrade all the old devices to modern specs while keeping compatibility, go through the major sequencer/QOL requests and so on, but that would mean working without any obvious visible new devices to advertise. Anyway, I have the feel that in Reason Studios they doesn't use the software they developed...because if they should do that, many aspects related to the sequencer would be improved...how they create ambient or soundtrack music without note chase? how they play any kind of music, including rock music like they said in the documentary of reason 13, without folders, cc lanes, track freeze ecc...
So my question now is: how long can Reason survive only with the concept "there is a the rack for everything"?

No, that couldn't possibly be further from the truth. In certain - to some folks (me included) very important - regards no other DAW's sequencer is as modern&mighty as Reason's.
It absolutely does not function (merely) like a tape-machine.

This seems to be a misconception many users have - in Reason the cables are completely optional. You neither have to ever use, nor even see them in order to achieve the exact same routings as you can when actually using them.loungepanda wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 8:35 am but the virtual rack cabling makes it inelegant and time consuming.

I don't recall CV-based modulation ever working without patching cables, the closest thing to Bitwig, Ableton Live, or Cubase in terms of UI is the ARCUS User Knobs (macros) — but even that requires patching. https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack ... ser-knobs/... So that would imply one of Reason’s core principles — modulation — is essentially being dropped.jens wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 7:13 pmThis seems to be a misconception many users have - in Reason the cables are completely optional. And then, for a comfortable workflow, you still need the Blamsoft PolyCV stuffs — because Reason couldn’t manage to solve that either ... Fine, I’ll stop. Kicking a dead horse won’t bring back decent modulation routing anyway.
To be fair, the best thing about it is still how you can bounce Player output to a Blocks and start building from that — solid idea. But time’s moved on, and Reason didn’t: they’re not developing what works, and they’re not fixing what doesn’t. Can’t really move forward like that.

I said no cables are required, not that no patching is required.xbitz wrote: Fri May 09, 2025 6:03 amI don't recall CV-based modulation ever working without patching cables, the closest thing to Bitwig, Ableton Live, or Cubase in terms of UI is the ARCUS User Knobs (macros) — but even that requires patching.jens wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 7:13 pmThis seems to be a misconception many users have - in Reason the cables are completely optional. You can simply hide the cables via the respective setting in the preferences menu (and then hitting k) and subsequently just right-click any source or destination in the back of the rack to make the desired connection.

^^^ Fair enough
... but I like cables — my problem with Bitwig is that I can’t see what’s modulating what. What I’d need is a combination of both: creating modulations without cables, but editing them with cables. That would be my ideal DAW.
ps. this is why the Modulat framework is great in AL ... but for example, even here you have to patch things up just to create something — and again when you swap modules, you have to re-patch everything. Bitwig did a great job with this in the Grid (can replace modules in the same family without re-patching), but there’s still no dedicated modulation Grid. Maybe one day.
