Vocals advice

I just started on trying to record and mix some songs for the band I play guitar in. I'm in the mixing phase right now. Drums, bass and guitar wise I think it's quite there (might need some polishing still), however I'm struggling with the vocals. I could really use some feedback on the mix as it is right now to get me going from here on. I automated the volume on a lot of the vocals and the plugin chain I'm using is: EQ --> Compressor --> THR Voxguru with De-esser, saturarion, (room) reverb and a very small amount of doubling at the end.

Does this need more compression? More EQíng to fit is more into the mix?

I usually just put in cuss words, erotic sounds or forms of grunting... So you are doing worlds better... Go forth & be bold, get drunk first if it helps...

Try adding doubling and delay (both, not one or the other). Doubling will give you that radio effect, delay will make the the vocals sit in with the music better and will keep the endings from sounding abrupt.

Also try compressor before EQ. EQ first actually makes more sense theoretically but it causes you to have to adjust the compressor every time you change the EQ, so not worth the hassle.

People could help better if you give a reference for what you are trying to achieve that you haven't figured out.

Yes apologies. I'm looking for a sound similar and in between Jinjer (clean vocals) and bands like Evanescence/Within Temptation. What I like about Jinjer is the balace between the heavy downtuned guitars and the clean vocals, however sometimes a bit to dry. Thats where Evanescence/Within Temptation comes in with the more reverb'isch sound.

Also what I find with my mix is that it sits too much on top of the music instead of 'in' the mix ( maybe because of the low guitars and high vocals?)

Yeah I was being somewhat nice in a bizarre way but was quite serious on the grunts, cusswords & erotic sounds... Inserting such is a great way to ensure your tunes won't get stolen whether they are good or bad...

My secret weapon on vocals is the MV2 from Waves. It’s a must have plugin in my opinion. It literally will push your vocals or any other element right to the front and grab whatever processing and bring with it. It’s amazing. Running it pre fx is typically best option but experiment with both.
