Nice walk-through, Taron :tu: Fun to see someone else explain the synth I designed (and Bjorn, of course, coded to his high standards).

Just to clear up a few things mentioned in the video: Ragnarok-2 is an extended version of the first Ragnarok VST instrument, which is based on the actual Ragnarok hardware synthesizer that was built by me back in the eighties. Several 'quirks', like the waveforms/registers summing volume, result from emulating the exact architecture of that synth. The knob that mixes between the oscillators and noise is exactly how it worked on the hardware, and most analog synths around that time had this same implementation. Things like how the FX behave (distortion and chorus) are the result from them being 'bolt on' to the synthesizer just like the real one, that didn't have internal FX but was always complemented by FX stomp boxes. Incorporating those FX deeper into the synthesizer architecture would be pretty difficult because of how everything was setup inside it.

A lot of things in version 2 are again 'bolted on', based ion the original architecture stat is emulated in the first VST emulation.

However, I do think you found a bug: The noise mix knob should always mix to noise only, no matter which oscillator sources are selected. Maybe Bjorn can look into that.
Fantastic, CW! And I'm thrilled about you showing up and giving feedback! :hyper:
I absolutely figured most was because of emulating the hardware, which is a great reminder what an achievement this was all by itself already. I'd have been over the moon back then, too. Probably even today, haha! :phones:
As exciting as it is to translate a real hardware into software, I believe you created a brilliant orientation that greatly deserves an "inspired" software evolution. Unfortunately Ragnarok is the end of all things, making me guess there is no name for anything after it :scared: :hihi: ...but maybe it could be Ragnarok Omega (the absolute end of the end?), where things could get a little idealized. It would be legendary, I think.

I've got a little list already. :D

Anyway, thank you very much for coming in to clear things up! Great timing, too, because I am really thinking about making a little series of mini tutorials/tips'n'tricks for the curious beauty! 8)
Might give me some chances to forward these insights! :tu:

Thanks for the compliments, but let's not forget Bjorn actually brought this VST version to life.

Please don't hesitate to drop me a PM if you like to ask for specifics regarding the back-story of the Ragnarök synthesizer.

Hi, all!

It's been a couple of years, but I thought I might have some time over the summer to try OSC out again. It's a ton of fun, although it made me remember that one of the reasons I stopped was that I'd end up spending all my music-making time just messing around with different OSC ideas. At any rate, here's where I ended up:

https://soundcloud.com/h_s_j_e/this_is_ ... al_sharing

I used Reaper v 7.39
36 instances of FBM Ragnarök 2
13 instances of Reaper ReaEQ
5 instances of Dragonfly Plate Reverb
2 instances of Dragonfly Hall Reverb
2 instances of Limiter No. 6
2 instances of Reaper ReaXComp
1 instance of Dragonfly Room Reverb
1 instance of Dragonfly Early Reflections
1 instance of Valhalla Supermassive Reverb
1 instance of TDR Molotok
1 instance of Sonic Anomaly Transpire

Sorry, I am late in the game, but these were some busy days over here...

Ragnarök v2.0.2 is released:
  • Fixed sample rate handling
  • Fixed Osc./Noise mix
  • Fixed MIDI event handling (VST3)
  • Added Pitchbend/Mod.Wheel smoothing

Cheers, Björn

Thanks Björn,

I can confirm that the VST3i version now responds to pitch bend messages on all MIDI channels, rather than just channel 1! [Using Reaper 7 as my DAW]

Thank you, Doc! :tu: It was indeed a parameter in the iPlug2 framework that I missed (maybe because I'm not much fond of VST3...).

Cheers, Björn

Oops ... easy done though, had to be something relatively simple like that. Glad you found it and zapped the bug. :-D

Thank you Björn!

I still have this thing that oversampling one instance affects the others.
Instance one has 2x OS and instance 2 sounds an octave lower.

Ragnorok2 was full of lovely surprises which led in many different directions, and was lots of fun. Enjoy. Also, great sounding synth - thanks Bjorn!
