Taupe Studio is not just another tape emulation plugin—it's a complete reimagining of what tape sampling can be in the digital domain. Available in VST3, AAX, and AU formats, Taupe Studio dives deeper into the physics and nonlinearities of analog tape machines—those legendary devices that have shaped the sound of countless records.

At the heart of this evolution is a brand-new proprietary engine built to capture the complex, organic behavior of tape with unmatched depth and realism. We’ve given this new tape emulation technology a name—a bold identity that reflects its innovation and authenticity: HTET™ (Hyper Tape Emulation Technology).

Key Features
  • 9 Distinct Tape Profiles: Sampled from 5 iconic machines with varied IPS speeds and tonal behavior.
  • Multi-Speed Tape Operation: Choose tape speed (IPS) to control frequency response, saturation, and headroom.
  • Wow & Flutter Control: Dial in mechanical modulation for vintage-style pitch variation and character.
  • Advanced Panning & Stereo Width: Multiple stereo modes and a smooth “Amount” control for phase-coherent widening.
  • Real-Time Display & Filters: Visualize EQ curves, HP/LP filtering, spectrum, and tape response (clean vs. saturated).
  • Hysteresis Control: Transition from Tight to Loose behavior to shape Taupe’s dynamic tone and response.
  • Oversampling & Listening Modes: Select performance profiles for tracking, mixing, or critical evaluation.
  • Resizable UI: Scale the plugin window for any resolution or screen layout.
  • Factory Presets: Includes a curated collection of musical starting points for different instruments and mixes.

Next-Generation Tape Emulation, Redefined

Inspired by the original Acqua plugin Taupe, this next-generation tool takes everything that made Taupe special and elevates it to new heights. We’ve re-engineered the core technology, refined the sonic behavior, and added new features to deliver what we believe is a true milestone in analog emulation.Tape emulation is an artform.

It goes far beyond EQ curves or distortion profiles—real tape responds dynamically to input level, frequency content, machine settings, and the very nature of the magnetic medium itself. And while many plugins claim to emulate tape, most fall short under real-world conditions. Taupe Studio is our answer to that challenge. After an exhaustive evaluation of the competition and hundred of hours of development, we believe we’ve delivered a truly next-level solution.

Authentic Tape, Eight Ways

Taupe Studio includes 8 tape profiles, captured from 5 iconic tape machines at various tape speeds (IPS). Each profile offers a different tone, saturation curve, and dynamic behavior.
  • Tudor 810 – 15 IPS: Warm and balanced. Great for vocals, guitars, and mix buses.
  • Tudor 810 – 30 IPS: Clean and open. Ideal for mastering or transparent processing.
  • Tudor 810 – 7.5 IPS: Thick low end and vintage tone. Works great on bass and drums.
  • Tudor 80 – 15 IPS: Fast, punchy, and saturated. Suitable for stereo buses and full mixes.
  • APEx ATR102 – 15 IPS: Smooth, with a rounded top end. Tames harshness beautifully.
  • APEx ATR102 – 30 IPS: Wide and transparent. Ideal for stems and detailed audio.
  • APEx ATR102 HI-FI – 30 IPS: A high-fidelity, linear variant. Ideal for mastering and precision work.
  • RevoLution G36 – 7.5 IPS: Rich and compressed, with tube-like warmth.
  • Viki 88 – 7.5 IPS: Gritty and raw. Perfect for creative sound design.
Each model has its own vibe—choose based on feel, not just fidelity.

You made the interface look like an Ampex 351 but didn't include a 351 tape profile. Also, did you remove the preamps? If you properly emulated a 351 and included a preamp of it, I would buy.

The preamp changes according to the selected model, but the preamp switch manages the harmonic part.

Thanks. Please add a 350 or 351 model.

How much CPU does this take compared to UADx Studer/Ampex and IK Tape Machines?
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

I'm sure it sounds lovely, but HTETᵀᴹ, really?

Over here, with an AMD 3950X, the IK Tape 80 takes about 19% of one core fully utilized in Reaper with 595 samples latency. This takes about 7.5% of one core fully utilized with 4,306 samples latency. Even the ZL version, which I always thought meant zero latency, still introduces 2,923 samples latency.

Hmm.. first impressions for me are "did they use a broken ATR-102 machine?". This is absolutely not the frequency response of a golden unit.. heck it isn't even the frequency response or behavior of a mediocre maintained unit. It's so ridiculously dark sounding that it's not even funny.

Or did they forget some form of noise reduction system when sampling? Or was it badly biased? Crappy tape quality? Whatever the case, this is NOT how a high-end well maintained ATR-102 should sound.

Was the EQ section engaged with a non-flat EQ curve when you listened? It's my understanding that this will filter the sound in addition to any frequency response alteration from the tape model itself.
A well-behaved signature.

The 15IPS machine is so bad I agree.

At 30IPS it's still a little dark but much, much better. Very odd. Bug in 15IPS?

They've said on Gearspace that based on feedback, they'll be adding a "more hi-fi version of the ATR for those looking for a less filtered sound".

Taupe Sudio sounds bad to me. I don't get it. I must be missing something. Or maybe not. Either way, I am not impressed. I can't see this product turning around as dramatically as it would need to in order to sound better than any of the other myriad of tape emulations I have. Thanks for trying.
