What do you want from Reason 13.5 or 14?

i'm not saying Reason has been as lean and mean since Record was merged to make it a an aspiring DAW rather than a midi sequencer with a proprietary "rack" environment (it's still an aspiring DAW to this day!) but some of that is because you were probably working in redbook back in the day. load one of those projects up at 24bit/96khz and replace a couple subtractors with expanse or europa and you'll see some resource usage.eLawnMust wrote: Sun May 11, 2025 5:32 pm It should be like old Reason 2.5 or 3... Using NO resources, no need for stupid track 'bouncing' as you could have 50-60 tracks going no need to freeze anything... Old Reason 2.5 & 3 is what I gauge everything against for efficiency, the absolute best demo tunes were made in 2.5 as well... Hell, Propellerhead don't even like anyone even mentioning old Reason... I was banned for good on ReasonTalk just for posting a comment where I mentioned using Reason 3, it was my very first comment...

It's still pretty low even with their newer instruments and fx.
Anyway, I'm still slightly upset about the Drum Sequencer player - There should be pattern linking! Such an odd omission. 8 patterns but no way to link them
Either that or have like a drum pattern mode for the sequencer like in S1 or Cubase.

Quick question..re. Reason Studios.
Do grace upgrade applies when upgrading to Reason Studios 11 (boxed) from previous v before 10 And
the license then becomes 13 ?
Steinberg type of grace upgrade...
Thx

Youre 100% right but the guys at RS won't listen. Never.loungepanda wrote: Mon May 19, 2025 6:23 am It's still pretty low even with their newer instruments and fx.

For those unhappy with Reason, what's the advantage of using Reason versus, for example, VCV rack?? With the latter you can also load it as a plugin within a DAW should you prefer better audio recording capabilities (and maybe a better piano roll if you don't bother with internal sequencing).
Add to this you get (IMVHO) better sounding syntns.
It's being a bit masochistic sticking with something you don't have to suffer with other options.
I like Reason but if I had to choose going back to a similar modular environment, I'd look at IE VCV first.

Yes, this is the logical setup — in the plugin version it's best to have a fixed-size, windowed interface, and inside the DAW you really can't avoid having a sidebar browser.

Reason has some RE makers that make modular stuff a la eurorack simulator type platforms like VCV and Cherry including a few direct ports of real world modules (noise engineering, presteign macro, some valley people stuff). Mostly not single amps/oscillators/voltage controllers etc though those minimalist building blocks are available as a few different sets of REs, and you can definitely built your own instruments and effects from scratch if that's your thing. But the reason rack's strength is not a being a fully modular low level environment, it's having some of the best (and most complex/unmodular) instruments and creative effects available anywhere integrated into and native to a fully modular environment with all the creative freedom and flexibility that is the point of fully modular systems.VOODOO U wrote: Tue May 20, 2025 3:37 pm For those unhappy with Reason, what's the advantage of using Reason versus, for example, VCV rack?? Soft synths are a taste thing but I think several of the best sounding and coolest instruments available anywhere are only available as Reason REs. I think their "fun" design style is a psychological barrier to fully appreciating them for some people (maybe with a modular background?) that heavily associate "serious" looking design with quality. I personally love the look of Reason and think it's a refreshing change of pace from other DAWs.
A logical next big step for Reason after modernizing the sequencer and other aspects of the program that are stuck in the aughts (if that ever happens) would be to implement MPE along with full support for the VST3 midi spec. You can already seamlessly integrate real world CV hardware and that would allow full usage of VST instruments with all the reason rack's great players and other cool midi manipulation stuff (like delta midi computer wich is basically a self-contained modular midi effect platform in a single RE). I think they've not supported VST midi because they mistakenly believe keeping the rack a walled garden for their player effects is more important to their bottom line than allowing novice users to use the composition aid plugins that have grown so popular in recent years in the rack and more advanced users to use all the great midi processing options in the rack with their collections of VST instruments. If that is true in the short run, which I doubt it is, it's definitely not true in the long run.

I would guess ease of use and GUI. I think Reason's biggest pro is that it generally makes synths that are easy to understand/figure out. Reason does that better than almost any company.VOODOO U wrote: Tue May 20, 2025 3:37 pm For those unhappy with Reason, what's the advantage of using Reason versus, for example, VCV rack?? I think many times though Reason sacrifice flexibility and power over ease of use so alot of times this causes alot of criticisms with the company especially concerning their DAW.

Complete redesign of the arranger/sequencer and mixing console in terms of UX/UI and features to match industry standard DAW workflows.
Updating the visual appearance of the old rack units to meet today's expectations, giving the application and devices/mixing console as a whole a unified, modern look.
Currently, placing any 20+ years old R1 half rack unit next to a recently designed one is like traveling back to the 1990s.
If Reason's long-standing UX/UI design concept needs to be drastically changed to achieve the above, let's do it now, or the platform will soon disappear.
