Expanse-5 (XP-5) is a deeply expressive virtual analog synthesizer born from Acustica’s groundbreaking MAREA series. Available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats, XP-5 faithfully captures the soul of a legendary, five-voice polysynth of the late analog era—celebrated for its rich tone, musical flexibility, and iconic presence in countless recordings.

Faithful to the principles of classic subtractive synthesis, XP-5 captures the essence of that era while pushing the boundaries with modern enhancements. From an oversampled, high-resolution architecture to advanced modulation and spatial features, XP-5 blends vintage character with cutting-edge digital precision—offering a timeless sound redesigned for today's creative workflows.

At its core lies MUST (Modular Unified Synthesis Technology), Acustica’s proprietary engine designed to deliver ultra-low latency, efficient CPU usage, and pristine audio quality. This cutting-edge architecture ensures that XP-5 delivers not just authenticity, but also the reliability and flexibility demanded by today's music producers and sound designers.

The Legacy Reimagined

XP-5 is more than just a digital re-creation—it's a tribute to a synthesizer that shaped the sound of countless award-winning albums across genres. This instrument, often considered the pinnacle of analog polysynth design, was beloved for its lush textures, intuitive layout, and ability to inspire. XP-5 encapsulates this heritage, offering the same expansive tonal range and luxurious analog character, now enhanced with modern digital control and refinement.

Originally conceived with five voices—one for each finger of a performing hand—the instrument's unique architecture promoted expressive polyphonic play. XP-5 retains this spirit but pushes beyond the limitations of the original, offering enhanced stereo capabilities and expanded voice count. This allows for richer, wider, and more immersive soundscapes.

Advanced Digital Architecture: Oversampling Without Compromise

Expanse-5 (XP-5) is not just another digital emulation. It represents a breakthrough in synthesizer architecture—engineered from the ground up to run entirely at oversample rate, without reliance on block-based processing. Every module—from oscillators to filters, envelopes, LFOs, and performance controls—operates continuously at elevated internal frequencies, ensuring unmatched temporal precision and audio fidelity. The result is a seamless synthesis environment where modulation, signal shaping, and sound generation happen sample-by-sample, in real time.

Why Oversample Everything?

Running the entire signal chain at oversample rate delivers tangible sonic benefits:

• Extreme detail and transients, ideal for sharp percussive sounds and fast envelopes.
• Clean modulation and PWM, free of stepping, zipper noise, or aliasing.
• Consistent phase behavior, crucial for stereo imaging and analog-style motion.
This architecture allows XP-5 to preserve the sonic integrity of its analog inspiration while offering far greater resolution and responsiveness. This minimizes aliasing, enhances transient clarity, and enables smooth, analog-like modulation across the entire signal chain.

Tone Calibration & Authenticity

After building the core engine of XP-5, the team focused on the challenging task of calibration—ensuring the sound was not just technically accurate, but emotionally authentic. A carefully modeled Rev 3 unit served as the main tonal reference, with input from trusted experts and extensive beta testing driving further refinements. To deepen the process, a rare Rev 2 was also examined to capture subtle differences in tone and behavior.

That said, even two Rev 3s from the same production period, with nearly identical serial numbers, can sound noticeably different. The condition of each unit, component aging, and years of use all shape its voice. No two analog synths ever sound exactly alike, which is why our goal wasn’t to build a generic emulation—but to capture the living personality of our hardware. Not just its frequency curves, but its soul.

Beyond Original

While XP-5 faithfully captures the essence of its analog predecessor, it goes further by introducing performance-enhancing features, such as:

• Age: Simulates analog wear with drift and imperfections for vintage warmth.
• Superstereo: Expands the stereo image by intelligently duplicating and modulating each voice with complete pitch and phase decorrelation, creating a deep, immersive three-dimensional soundstage.
• Sub: Adds a dedicated sub-voice for focused, controllable low-end presence.
• Advanced Effects: Built-in high-quality effects (saturation, chorus, delay, reverb) derived from renowed Acustica Audio plugins.
• Multiband Dynamics: Integrated compression inspired by OTT for punch and cohesion.

I wonder if both the Rev2 and Rev3 filters are modeled. The SSM (Rev2) and IR3109 (Jupiter/Juno) OTA filters are some of the best ever!

Edit: It's just the Prophet and TH-8 filters. Also, nothing about the demo compels me to buy it when I already have Repro. But the FM in Expanse-5 sounds a bit more musical.

Post

Doesn’t Alice-9 already have the prophet oscillators and filters?

Post

"What’s special? In XP5, filters support modulations that run at least at audio rate—and often at oversample rate. In contrast, TH8 and AL9 mostly process modulations at block rate."

"Don’t sleep on the latest filter added to XP5—the SQ3 filter! We think it represents the state of the art for a certain kind of filter… maybe you can guess which one.

Also, as of yesterday, XP5 can now run the filters from TH8."

"The whole engine has to run at audio-rate, so we went full throttle: no block processing anywhere, everything sample-accurate, and the entire path can run oversampled. That alone was a huge lift, but it’s what gives Expanse 5 its snap and detail.

We also had to nail quirks most emulations skip—like true free-running self-oscillation, complex reset logic, and percussive behavior—so the synth can swing from warm pads to sharp, guitar-ish plucks without breaking a sweat. All the oscillator drift and instability were captured straight from the real hardware we keep in the studio."

I guess the prophet does have filter fm via polymod which is different to th8 and Alice.

I think I see a little MPE button in the top left. Don’t see it mentioned in the notes though.

Great catch... the manual confirms it:

"Can I use MPE (MIDI Polyphonic
Expression)?

Yes, XP-5 supports MPE when enabled,
allowing advanced expressive control per
note."

Hmm, I was going to wait until Black Friday to buy this, but now maybe I'll get it on the intro sale...

That seems to be all the information in the manual. So I wonder what that means, per note pitch bend only? Without a mod matrix, the most sensible thing is just to map the mod wheel modulation to either pressure or timbre. Not sure if any mpe expressions are supported, nothing in the UI supports that.

Dare I ask if the AU actually uses real parameter values instead of 0 to 1 like all their other synths?

Downloaded the trial. No surprises - Sound is great, the AU has parameter ranges from 0 to 1.000000 rather than real values, and the plugin makes a horrible glitch sounds when you change presets. Did you guys just reskin Thing8 or what?

Glad to hear you think the sound is great (that’s our main goal), but XP-5 uses an entirely new engine designed from the ground up for high-resolution synthesis. It’s not a reskin of Thing or any other product: different architecture, different model, different development.

Parameter Ranges (0 to 1.000000 in AU) seem to be a limitation of the AU plugin format itself, since macOS (and Logic) often display normalized values (0.0 to 1.0) in the automation lanes, regardless of how the plugin is programmed. Regarding the "glitch noise" when switching programs, it’s being looked at (remember we still are at the introductory period), and if possible, it will be improved.
Thanks again for testing it out!

Not a problem with any other AU plugins so it's not a macOS or Logic limitation at all. Just try another AU plugin and see for yourself.

Has also been a problem with Thing-8 since release. I was waiting for the glitches to be fixed and the AU parameter problem to be fixed before buying but unfortunately neither was fixed.

Post

I might've been interested in this, but I still haven't heard that the voice-stealing bug in Thing8 has been fixed, so...
A well-behaved signature.

Our team is actively working on improvements for XP-5, and similar updates are in progress for Thing-8 as well.
We’ll continue refining both based on everyone's input, so thanks again for testing and sharing your experience.

I've noticed some strange behavior like adjust the cutoff with high resonance there were two distinct sweeps that happened going from full cutoff to low. As if there were two parallel filters. Did a sweep up high and then another one started. So odd. Didn't replicate though.

I also notice sometimes there are jumps in sound with some parameter, but it seems patch dependent, as other times the same parameter is smooth.

where did you found this option?

i cant find anywhere how to trial. I downloaded aquarius but i have no option to trial the plugin, in fact i have no option to trial any plugins.

EDIT: found it, you have to type in search and there is a separate find called trial.

Very unintuitive that you cannot directly just press trial inside the plugin info i must say
