For more FM, try Exakt and Aurora FM. Furnace Tracker emulates the OPZ chip.

Just tested ExactLite. Some good sounds but the Lately Bass patches are completely wrong. FM8 and DX7 V sound much more like the hardware.

By "hardware", does this include the amount of harmonics generated in an operator pair during phase modulation? If you look at a spectrogram, more harmonics are generated by Chipsynth MD at max sine wave operator modulation compared to OPS7.Uncle E wrote: Tue Jun 17, 2025 5:37 pm Just tested ExactLite. I mean that FM8 and DX7 V sound more like the TX81Z.

Since the TX81Z is the little brother of the DX-7, I would simply use DEXED for it.

Dexed doesn't have the extra waveforms, and in fact doesn't sound like TX81Z at all.

There is no Solid Bass patch for Dexed, AFAICT. The Wood Bass is closer to the hardware than FM8, and both sound closer after tweaking their Cutoff and Brightness, respectively. ExaktLite doesn't have a Wood Bass patch. I have an early release of a new FM synth that's coming out next week, its Lately Bass patch is kind of idealized (tougher and bigger sounding) but it also doesn't have a Wood Bass patch.

Dexed is just a DX7 emulation. The DX9 was the little brother of the DX7, not the TX81Z. Aurora FM also has TX81Z waveforms, and it sounds really crunchy with its built-in DAC settings. It actually adds harmonics to the modulation or waveform in a way that the OPS7 DAC doesn't.

That's because OPS7 emulates DX7 DACs, not TX81Z DACs. But Plogue is on the case, either way.

For Reason, Primal Audio FM4 is a nice TX81Z style synth with lofi quality settings. The company seems out of business unfortunately but the rack extension should remain usable because of how Reason works.

OPS7's Lately Bass is Solid.

Just to be obnoxious, windowing bursts of sinewaves is mathematically equivalent to exciting a bank of bandpass filters. FOF synthesis is what to check out if you want to do this. I learned how to do it on the Nord modular way back when. There's some neat papers on this out there in the world. It's pretty straightforward once you know what's happening. I always found that it was far easier to do this sort of thing with software than with the fs1r. I really enjoyed playing the fs1r but never enjoyed programming it.EvilDragon wrote: Mon Jun 16, 2025 11:26 pm No it's not done with bandpass filters, there's something about synced and windowed sines IIRC...

Solid Bass is a DX100 patch, since that is sine wave based it's easy to pull off using any DX7 emulator that uses sine wavesUncle E wrote: Tue Jun 17, 2025 8:46 pm There is no Solid Bass patch for Dexed, AFAICT. On the DX100 which only has 4 operators it uses algo #2, the DX7 has 6 ops of course but algo #14 on the DX7 has the same exact stack of 4 if you turn off operator 1&2
This video will show you how to make it
Lately Bass on the TX81Z is pretty much exactly the same. The main difference besides some slight velocity tweaks that don't matter much is that it uses waveform 5 for operator 2 which the DX7 doesn't have
OPS7, DX7-V, HALion7 and many other DX style FM plugins do have that waveform however

This person made an excellent Solid Bass patch for Dexed. It's the best one so far, even compared to OPS7:
