I've got a small collection of commercial software which I've puchased from a very limited budget, but there I times when I want to deploy some compositional capability to someone elses PC and I want software where there are no licencing issues.

The only really good free sequencer that I know of is the edition of Computer Muzys (1.5) which ships on the cover of Computer Music magazine (can't download it from the net). I recently installed Kristal but haven't had a chance to explore it yet.

Any other recommendations?

you might still be able to get a NFR version of Tracktion ,search the forum,
I really like krystal, it lacks midi at the moment but its very functional and easy to use,it does host vst effects but not instrumenets.Used together with cmuzys you've got a lot of basics covered,
Also you might wnat to pick up Audacity its a free audio editor.

If you only want MIDI sequencing, check out Jazz++. It's a dead but open source product.
