How many synths do you need?

Landr was giving away Synth X for free, not sure if that's still available. That's basically their Serum.

Synths.... I'm not sure what do you mean when saying Synths.
Of course there are plugins that are "just synths", but others are much more, for example:
Falcon, Kontakt are "platforms" so developers can build new instruments using custom gui with them.
Similarly Omnisphere, Avenger, Nexus are also platforms, but without the ability of creating custom gui for new instruments.
There are synths that can also function as an effect.
There are "synths" that can host other synths (for example unify).
There are synths that can output midi and control other synths.
....
I just wanted to point out that different "synths" has totally different features, and buying new synths can be OK, as long as you know what is that new/unique feature that makes you buy another synth.
For example i have several wavetable synths still grabbed Current. Why? Because it has a unique effect section. Also downloaded vital, just because it can make a text to wavetable.

I'm not sure why you don't understand the commonly understood term of "synth."dune_rave wrote: Fri Jun 13, 2025 3:18 am Synths.... I'm not sure what do you mean when saying Synths.
Nope. Falcon is a synth and only a synth. Kontakt is NOT a synth. It is only a platform to host other plugins (VIs, synths, etc).Of course there are plugins that are "just synths", but others are much more, for example:

Again, no. They are synths. They are not "platforms."Similarly Omnisphere, Avenger, Nexus are also platforms, but without the ability of creating custom gui for new instruments.
There are synths that have effects built into them, but they are still synths. And?There are synths that can also function as an effect.
? All synths output MIDI; it's part of what being a synth is, as it is not audio. There are synths that can output midi and control other synths.
This also just in, water is wetI just wanted to point out that different "synths" has totally different features,

Looks like a small debate
Hey, you totally misunderstand what kontakt is when you say:
"Kontakt is NOT a synth. It is only a platform to host other plugins (VIs, synths, etc)."
Kontakt can host other VIs? Tell me, please!

We’ve had this semantics issue before. Yes, Kontakt can literally host virtual instruments. No, it cannot host VI plugins.

Doesn’t Kontakt have a wavetable module in it now, or am I misremembering? If it does I don’t see how it’s not a synth. It’s not like you have to load a library to use it.

Yes, you’re correct. Also a granular engine.

If you get a Kontrol S88 controller it turns Kontakt into a playable instrument just like any other VI or any hardware synth. But any decent controller today can make Kontakt into one of the most powerful instruments on the planet. There is no hardware sampler that can beat Kontakt with a good controller.mixyguy2 wrote: Sun Jun 22, 2025 1:23 am I guess I'm missing something then. Please show me how you "play" Kontakt.

That sounds like it's the controller that's the instrument, not Kontakt, but I'd have to see it to better understand it I think...still, its main function by far is that of being a host to VIs, not being a VI itself.

? "VI plugin" is redundant. A VI is a plugin. Contrary to what some believe, "plugin" does not only describe special effects.Uncle E wrote: Fri Jun 20, 2025 3:21 am We’ve had this semantics issue before. Yes, Kontakt can literally host virtual instruments. No, it cannot host VI plugins.

New instrument, load a sample, set to wavetable, throw on a per-voice filter and some modulation, and play like any other synth?? I'm not saying it's a good wavetable synth, but it's definitely a wavetable synth. Why are we even having this discussion?mixyguy2 wrote: Sun Jun 22, 2025 1:23 am I guess I'm missing something then.
