This just in: water is wet.
Rick must be bored or something, this is some Captain Obvious s*** here. Pop music has been manufactured by labels and teams for decades now. Hell, I've even done ghostwriting for a few (very, very small-time) labels and artists. If the general public knows this, they obviously don't care because it's a formula that works very well for the "industry" - yes, manufacturing artists to sell songs is a business aimed at maximizing profits and not some philanthropic exercise in bringing joy to people's lives via original music. I'm sure those songwriters are more aware of this than we are and are happy to see their names in the credits and on those paychecks. Not every musician or songwriter wants to be a Sabrina Carpenter. I sure as hell wouldn't.
On a somewhat related topic, why aren't people up in arms about cover bands? I mean, those greedy bastards don't write original music and are making a living off the backs of the "real" artists (that were manufactured by their record labels). Or, what about those violinists, pianists, and opera singers who get so much credit for performing music made by composers who died centuries ago (and also stole their ideas from other composers)? What's so original about that? Yes, I'm being somewhat facetious to drive home a point - how much purism do we expect from artists? For me personally, hey if Taylor Swift and her label are receiving a fresh new shipment of cash every day from selling a product that millions of fans around the world want to buy, more power to her...and her team.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

People actually don't know this for many reasons, including that they don't want to know.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.
