So let's see:

last generation CPU [G4]
last generation RAM [PC2700 DDR]
last generation HDD [ultraATA]
last generation AGP [4x only with just 32Mb RAM]
last genration optical [Super-drive is what? 2x?]

And all for only US$500 + monitor + + + +

I wish I could get that kind of money building outdated, non-upgradable PC's!

Apparently, this comes standard with a 40 GB hard drive, and just 256 MB of RAM. Plus, it costs big-time to upgrade it..... check prices before buying.

...and you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse... :hihi:

I'm pretty sure you aren't the target market, Bones -- but show me a three pound, 85 cubic inch PC with those specs.

Don't do it my way.

I think a PlayStation 2 and MTV Music Generator 2 Platinum would be a much more powerful and affordable option. :hihi:

too bad you actually can't use this as a node. you need a G5 w/gigabit to run a node in logic. this computer is awesome for who it's aimed at(Ipod newbies). it's nice to have a decent little computer with an amazingly small footprint.

I'm pretty sure I could get a new laptop with better specs for the price of that + monitor + keyboard + mouse. Its another classic case of Apple's style-over-substance marketing.

The Apple business model is charging premium prices for hardware to cover the cost of developing the software, which they give away or sell cheap. For anyone interested in running Apple software without spending a fortune this makes a lot of sense. It's the kind of computer you'd buy for your mom, and there are a lot of moms out there.

Smart move on Apple's part, I think. I bet they'll sell tons of them. This is what the Cube should have been. Too bad they couldn't have squeezed 512MB ram into them though. 256MB isn't quite enough to run OsX comfortably.

But what are you going to 'run' on it? It's no good for games (256mb ram). Very limited for making music (G4 cpu) and useless for rendering and storing media (40GB HDD).

I suppose it can be used as a word processor, an internet gateway or as a glorified but limited iPod.

It makes me sad to see people recommending such limitation when a PC could be had for the same price that does so much more and is easily upgradable. :(

Not quite the same spec, but less than half the price @ $185. Designed essentially to make affordable computers for third world countries.

Features a 366MHz AMD Geode x86, 128MB RAM, 10GB drive, USB, 56k modem, a host of Internet-centric software, and Windows CE with XP-extensions

Safari, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto. That's all a lot of people need.

just want to respond to some uninformed statements. you CAN use the mac mini as a logic node via ethernet or firewire. the only reason they recommend gigabit ethernet and a G5 for node use is because it allows for more than ONE node. you can still hook 2 G4's up via standard ethernet and get decent results with logic 7.

as far as a 1.2 or 1.4 ghz G4 not being powerful enough to do music on? i get by completely fine in Logic on my 1.2ghz single processor G4 using nothing but softsynths and EXS24mkII to write music. there's a reason the FREEZE function exists in the program, but i can get pretty damn far without it. i'm also willing to bet that someone using a mac mini with reason would never have to worry about running out of processing power ever.
