A few questions

I recently bought Crusher-X after much deliberation and have to say it exceeds my expectations.

It truly is the final boss of granular plugins. Truly amazing stuff.

I just want to ask a few questions about things I've encountered.

I can't seem to get the buffer level fill to work properly.

I'm using Crusher-X insert effect on an audio track in Live.

I have Live mode off and Flash/Audio (blue icon with lightning and waveform) set. Just for clarity sake I have a drum loop with just a very bassy kick and a hi hat so it can distinguish easily between bass and treble.

No matter what I do the buffer always captures the full audio going into the buffer. The tool tip talks about a horizontal line when I hover over one of the flags. The only horizontal line I can see is the dashed line and that seems just to represent the detected input level. I don't know what sets the threshold for level detection.

Say if I just want broadband level detection for buffer fill based on the input level alone how would I set that up?

Can I use a sidechain input to trigger a bufffer fill?

When I trigger a flash what determines the length of the capture?

In the VST3 version of the Crusher instrument the sidechain is routed to the grain input but in the pro tools AAX instrument version it isn't.

Is fixed mode loop button only available when you import a file directly into the buffer?

Sorry about all the questions just trying to best understand this beast.

Thanks! Very appreciated!

This is intended ! In this mode it is just about triggering a next "fill". You may looking for the "glitcher" mode that works differently and allows you to "select" the frequencies where each grain "dances" on (see manual) .

Just "trigger" on a specific level is not possible. It always automatically adapt to the average level and then triggers on a spike depending on the filter setup (with that you can "select" frequency ranges).

No, the side chain is just feeding the side chain envelope follower for the Grain Modulation
kraster wrote: Mon Jun 30, 2025 11:25 am When I trigger a flash what determines the length of the capture?
Some automatics determinate by mainly the current Delay length

Yes in the VST3 Instrument version as in AAX the sidechain is only meant for control and not for sample input (as Mono only)

Yes, as this is just a "helper" for "file playback"

Don't worry, we're happy to help! From your questions a couple of feature thoughts could be interesting like:

Side-chain routing to trigger Glitcher / Buffer fills
Loop mode for "recorded" buffer too
Determined level trigger
Determine the buffer fill length

Thanks again!

Thanks for your response.

I've been using it more and have the buffer triggering figured out.

I couldn't really hear the effect because the grain length was too long so each trigger was blurring into the next.

I'm probably coming at crusher more from a musical effect (as opposed to a sound design) angle so a lot of my questions are coming from there.

I have to say as a musical effect it's among the best things I've ever used. It's insanely flexible. It can be a chorus, delay, reverb, compressor, filter, pitch shifter, time stretcher, reverser, tremolo and on and on. It's the ability to get so detailed within that that really blows me away.

I mentioned in the feature thread that having snap/quantize functions for different parameters would be a nice qol feature. That could be extended to the fixed buffer too. Have a set period e.g a bar or two bars. That would allow for some really nice controlled chaos.
