I like this. It sounds good and the extra features are useful, but it's hard to pay more than $25 when you've already got multiple pultecs. Not sure what gets you the $29 offer, I see $39 in my D16 account.

I got the $29 offer, but in the UK it goes up to £29 once the (20%) tax is added.

This is a pretty lookin' plugin.

No preamp staging at all, so the model is hinged entirely on the filter quality. Not sure what "true passive circuit emulation"means in a digital environment as you can't get truly passive behaviour. all digital filter designs are active, but its very easy to emulate the curve interactions, phase response etc. D16's filters have never really wowed me, so probs gonna sit this one out
So you think the tubes and transformers in the original circuit do nothing?

I like it. Note that it combines both the EQ1A and the mid range into one plugin, plus a few extra bells and whistles. Perhaps a bit late to the market (and I have the Noise Ash and the Warmy - neither have all the bands), but the real time analyzer does add an extra dimension and not only lets you see what you're doing (those old EQs were so 'mysterious' - now it's all out in the open) but also let you focus on sonically deficient areas without just turning everything up. For the intro price, I would recommend it if you've been eying a Pultec style EQ and don't have one. They should add that low/high cut though. And soon. Good presets too.

To be honest after I demoed this one I want to say that RTA is very useful additional to the plugin!

RTA is nice, almost as nice as the one in the Bettermaker passive eq. Tho the rest looks
better. Tbh I’m preferring the bettermaker
so far.

That one's nice too but it doesn't have the mid range EQ.

I think the closest would be the Overloud EQP.

Another one I already have lol…
Also, UA, Red Rock Sound, and some more that
I can’t think of atm.

I think what we're seeing in this thread is an example of market saturation of a particular type of plugin. I already own at least two Pultec type EQ plugins off the top of my head. I don't often use them but I like having them in my collection.

Unfortunately my plugin budget these days has little room for "like to have" plugins. "Must have" is pretty much the criteria for a purchase now. I'd like to own the D-16 Pulsatec but it's not a must have.

I often wonder if developers do any research to gauge what's already on the market before starting a new project. Or in this case was it "we have the hardware on hand so let's do an emulation or tribute"?

I can't remember where I read it so I'm unable to credit them, however their theory went D16 were working on an EQ for PunchBox, came up with a Pultecish design and then decided to release it as a standalone plugin.

Just third-hand conjecture however that does carry some weight IMO.

That said, I've since bought it and it will replace my other Pultecs soley on account of the RTA. Ease of use is more important to me than 1:1 recreation.

There are other factors. For example, product decisions like this are often part of a larger business strategy. It could be anything (or nothing). However, one example could be the company leadership decides its too risky to release more instruments (for whatever reasons) and decides they transitions to effects. The strategy being to release a ubiquitous effect plugin to pave the way for more to come. Business leaders have all kinds of rationale for their decisions. It's always a guess Maybe sometimes an educated guess.
