Can Kontakt be trusted?

I’ve returned to music production after about 1.5 years hiatus, and I’m a bit shocked how often Kontakt (6 and 7) crashes Cubase 14, especially with legacy and 3rd party samples. I had previously used these samples for years, and this never used to happen. I know NI is on its last legs financially, but are their products still usable, or are they doing what Cakewalk did a decade ago, minimizing their spend on quality, maximing short-term revenue, and just trying to remain solvent another day?

I've been using K6, K7 and K8 for years in Reaper and MuLab with no problem.

Considering how many producers use libraries within Kontakt, I think it's fair to say that it's still very usable.
NI may be making some interesting decisions and perhaps not as much focus on innovations as before, but Kontakt is very much their 'backbone'. As much as I dislike the poor DPI issues, and other complaints, overall it 'just works'.

What about old libraries? Has N.I. ever refused to allow a 3rd party library that was licensed by in independent developer to run on a newer version of Kontakt Player? Will old 3rd party libraries that were licensed to run on kontakt Player still run on modern versions of Kontakt Player?

If this really happens very frequently, something is wrong in your setup that is probably not Kontakt.erikgyle wrote: Sun Jul 06, 2025 6:27 am I’m a bit shocked how often Kontakt (6 and 7) crashes Cubase 14, especially with legacy and 3rd party samples.
I'm currently not using a great number of Kontakt instantiations in a given project, but Kontakt in any version (I use 6 & 7 today) has literally never through itself caused Cubase crashes.
(Going back over two decades.)
It might be better to ask for sort of tech support describing actual issues.

Up through v6 I used Kontakt regularly with many fully loaded instances for days at a time with a wide variety of player and non player libraries. When I ran into issues it wasn't Kontakt causing them. Usually a random effect or a problem with video playback in cubase. Every once in a while cubase would hang while dumping a 30 minute long render. I've not used v7 much but I can't imagine they broke it too much.

? Where did you get this?
They have their problems for sure, but I've rarely had problems with their stuff in terms of crashing etc. In fact, about the only time it happened was occasionally with VST3 plugins.
