Clavioline, ...any emulations ?

Out of curiosity, I'd like to know if this instrument has been emulated, by preference not as a sound bank but never mind...

Telstar by the Tornados is of course one of the earliest examples of it being used in a hit record.
I once owned a Clavioline in the early seventies - terrible to keep in tune!

A thought about that.
I know and love the Clavioline and I though about modelling it, but the sound itself it rather simple (as monophonic analogue of course). The magic is more about the way it was played (read : controller).
So question is whether a synth plugin should just emulate the sound or also the some possible articulations of the Clavioline, as it was designed in 1947 to emulate a bowed string.

I agree, the main interest of this instrument are its articulationsliqih wrote: Mon Jul 07, 2025 10:50 am A thought about that.

Seems like something you could do with a transistor organ. The voicings and play style seem to be a very very large part of the "sound". My old Hammond transistor organ can get really really close with some fiddling around on the drawbars.
Some midi scripting would make your input fully monophonic which would allow for similar playing style. Try the free martinic organs with some cabinet IRs. I'd imagine someone has captured IRs from the actual Clavioline speaker. If you want to go with a more synthesis oriented approach you could use an additive synth to achieve most of the raw tones of the thing (transistor or tube organs used banks of simple oscillators to mimic pipe organ stops).

I'm not sure how similar it would be but Cherry Audio's Solovox might be close? The Clavioline does have a great, strident, cor anglais kind of tone that is pretty distinctive..

Rick Jelliffe's Neumixturtrautonium has a "Telestar" preset. That might get you in the ballpark.

It wasn't very easy to play, the keys were all half the length of normal keys and the black notes all hinged from the front.

I spent a year trying to emulate a Clavioline on the Surge XT, as well as simulating a Lowrey organ. I should point out that, from what I've learned from analyzing samples, the Clavioline sound is essentially a nonlinear pulse wave that becomes more asymmetrical as the notes descend. I believe this is a characteristic of the way the frequency divider modifies the original waveform. However, the oscillator is only part of the sound. For the Clavioline sound, it's still necessary to cut the bass and distort the signal in a single-ended power amplifier.
I'll leave the link to my presets where the Clavioline simulation is included: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D8I2_Z ... sp=sharing

I don't know much about electronics, but from what I can see from internet demonstrations, the main filters that should be emulated are a cut at 1kHz and a boost around 3kHz, most of the controls end up doing almost the same thing, and everything that isn't LPF and HPF are scoops and resonances. I'll leave a diagram so that someone could describe the filtering session on the right.

I improved the Clavioline emulation, simplified some unnecessary things and mainly tried to add emulation of the tone choke resonator, it is not as flexible as I would like, but it gets most of the famous Clavioline sounds right.
