I know how I feel about itTeksonik wrote: Mon Mar 31, 2025 10:11 pm I don't know how I feel about George taking another developer's propriety preset format and incorporating into his synth as I can not believe he got permission from the elusive Ichiro Toda to do so. We haven't heard from Ichiro for years and my last attempt to contact him many years ago failed.
But Georges's modus operandi has always been to stand on the shoulders of giants so I guess it is to be expected.

Interesting. I had never heard of Corona, even though I am reasonably familiar with discoDSP's other synth plugins. How long has this been out?
Regardless, I just checked out a few demo tracks and was about to install the demo. However, I then checked the price. $199 seems a bit steep for a basic VA plugin (with some wavetable functionality). It's cool that Corona now imports JP-8000 patches. But I wonder how accurate this is, as Corona is not a 1:1 emulation of the JP-8000.
I have SO many synth plugins that can do a similar "Trance" sound. $69 (or even $99) seems more reasonable.

I just listened to some of Corona's presets. It does sound good. Moreover, all the presets I've listened to have been very usable (although not earth-shattering). Even my Virus T12 is hit and miss more than this.
But still, $199 seems pricey for a synth plugin whose GUI looks a bit amateurish and lacks a proper preset browser.
I'll have to think about this one.

Well after trying the Synth 1 preset import I'd have to pass on Corona at any price. It's truly abysmal. The ones I imported sounded nothing like they do in Synth 1.
I don't know how I feel about George taking another developer's propriety preset format and incorporating into his synth as I can not believe he got permission from the elusive Ichiro Toda to do so. We haven't heard from Ichiro for years and my last attempt to contact him many years ago failed.

Moving on....![]()
Far from the accuracy consideration :
Tried the Synth 1 import, one preset by one ... really ? how import 10 000 presets at once ?
JP8X import sysex but not midi file ?
I was hoping a lot from this, this is a such a disappointment !

Corona 6.4.3 Released - DAW Parameter Automation Fixed
We've resolved the parameter automation issues that some users experienced with DAW touch/latch/write modes. This update ensures real-time parameter response by implementing direct synthesizer engine updates, eliminating the delay between automation input and audio output.

Key improvements:
- setParameter() now immediately updates the synthesizer engine
- Real-time parameter updates for all DAW automation controls
- Direct synth->SetParameter() calls prevent automation lag
- Optimized lastParamValues cache system to avoid redundant updates
- Resolves the issue where automation functioned through GUI but not DAW controls

If I have seen the upgrade prices from Corona 5 to 6 correctly, the price for the upgrade has increased by about 230% since the release.
$29.99 -> $49.99 -> $99.99
Difficult to understand and “unique” or rather strange in the landscape of plugin developers.
On the positive side, I recognize that the plugin gets good updates on a regular basis (currently 6.4.4)
I have Corona 5 and would upgrade to version 6 but not at the current rates.
As a comparison: New customers get the latest version 6 for around $120.00.
Why am I writing all this? I don't know, I don't have high hopes that discoDSP will change anything in favor of existing customers.

I wouldn't call .sy1 format "proprietary", it's an openly readable TXT file with a bunch of numbers (parameter index, then parameter value - very simple). There is no end user license that prevents anyone from interpreting that data however they see fit. No permission is needed.Teksonik wrote: Mon Mar 31, 2025 10:11 pmI don't know how I feel about George taking another developer's propriety preset format and incorporating into his synth as I can not believe he got permission from the elusive Ichiro Toda to do so.
The only wording in readme of Synth1 states: "This software is freeware. Freely distributable. Feel free to copy or feature this, but please contact me if you do."
There is no clause whatsoever preventing reverse engineering.

So bored today that you needed to respond to a three plus month old post?
At any rate don't confuse legality with morality.
Is it legal to use the .sy1 format? Possibly, neither one of us are lawyers. I'll point this part out: "please contact me if you do". I doubt there was any contact made with Ichiro...out of respect.
Is allowing .sy 1 import morally right? Not in my opinion, and I care nothing about the opinion of others in this case.
At any rate as horrible as the Synth 1 patch import is in Corona it's probably not a real issue in the grand scheme of things.
