So this new group likely bought the IP and are starting from a deficit. After investing in the dilapidated IP, they spent many years deconstructing and reconstructing it into something usable on modern systems.

So you should not be surprised by the “upgrade” price because it’s really not an upgrade. It’s a new product from a new company that has had a considerable start-up cost to get here, and is only tangentially connected to the overrated nostalgia product it is marketed as.
I'm not sure how that's true, or even if it is, how it's relevant. Your financial situation can't impact your product's price if you have competition that's selling similar products for a lower price.

Have all the distortion algorithms changed? Have a lot of new ones been added? I know I can buy Arturia DIST COLDFIRE for $99, which makes a $95 upgrade from a previous version seem out of line. Also, why am I getting a better discount for buying Ohmboys Infinity than from my old Ohmicide license? That doesn't seem to make sense to me. Obviously, they can do whatever they want, but so can customers.

Zerocrossing you are correct. No new ownership, but they did have some departures (or just 1, plumforce, Laurent de Soras?).

That was from the Infinity thread.

No reason to rehash old stuff (even though I’m still bitter about the experience, I know that’s my own problem). They are indeed back and doing things in a new way.

As for price discussions, that has always been the norm on every release.

I would suggest if anyone tires of that and wants to only cover features or plugin use, to maybe create their own Ohm Force Ohmicide Users Thread. This one can remain for price/upgrades and other issues?

Here's my first impressions.
  • UI... terrible, as is expected with Ohmforce. Sorry, I'm not a fan of clever over clear. Oh, how nice! You've substituted a clear dropdown menu list of distortion types with a graphic showing a periodic table of distortions that have initials that are meaningless. It took me a while just to figure out how to get to the distortion type menu. Someone who's been using software for music since the 80s shouldn't be confused by something so basic. Fail.
  • Algorithms: This update has the same number of distortion types as the original, but names them differently... sometimes. Maybe they're different? WE'LL NEVER KNOW! Seemed like they renamed things so people couldn't easily see if they were the same as the their original algorithms. This is not an upgrade.
  • Sound: using the "Attract" algorithm, a bit more smooth than the original when oversampling is on. I'm assuming the original's "Hi Quality" setting is the equivalent... maybe not. Feedback seems a lot more tame and usable... though I miss the out-of-control original version. For a plugin like this, I actually like the old, more rough version.
  • Modulators, nice, but fairly basic. Most I can do in Bitwig on any plugin. Some things like the filtered noise and varislope are fun.
I'm going to skip this, as I already own Trash, Kombinant, Saturn, Coldfire, Thermal, MXXX, etc. It's cool enough to recommend to someone who may be starting out and looking for a creative distortion, but for someone with a well stocked arsenal, it doesn't seem to offer enough that's different from the original to make this jaded old man excited.

Ohm Force made a big mistake, in my opinion.
They shouldn't have named the new plugins after the old ones, then the outcry wouldn't be nearly as big.
Now there's a connection between the old and the new in people's minds.
And then they crawl out of their holes and want a discount. After all, 20 years ago, people invested their hard-earned money.

There are so many beautiful words with “ohm” in them...

Ohmlete, Ohmnivore, Bohmb, Atohm, Arohma, Abdohmen, Axiohm, Genohm, Ohmega, Hohmer, Zohmbie

Okay, now I want a plugin from you called zOhmbie!

I don’t think it mattered what they called it. People would have noticed it’s still pretty much the OG Ohmicide.

Really, I think everyone is just able to say their point of view and not be wrong. From the Ohmies side, development takes time and effort. They could have just moved on completely, but they didn’t. Some people will appreciate that and others will have already replaced this, seeing little value in gong back. Again, nobody is wrong here.

I actually think it makes sense to release this while they have their eurorack module out. Still would be a killer (no pun intended) promo to tie the software license to the module.

Dirk probably sold us the same DSP ten times, but always repackaged it nicely.
Just like the fish chef in the movie “The Big Short.”

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but common sense isn't forbidden either.

Is the Ohmicide free legacy edition no longer available now that the new |S| version has been released? I can't seem to find the installer for it on the Ohm Force website anymore.

Post

^^^ I don't see it as available with the other 'legacy' apps, except in my personal account as having been purchased, and therefore, downloadable.

Yeah, that's why I bought Ohmicide all those years ago and still use it. What I'm saying isn't that Ohmicide isn't good, I'm saying that Ohmicide S doesn't seem like a $60 upgrade, YMMV. I don't think the UI is an upgrade. I can't tell if it has new algorithms, or it's the old ones with new names. It's the same number of algorithms, that I can tell. One that has the same name seems to sound very similar, if not slightly tamer. Maybe a higher oversampling rate? The modulation I already have. It's somewhat cool to have the modulation saved with the plugin's preset, but I can save it as a Bitwig preset.

That's fair. Only you can decide what something is worth to you.

The UI has issues with being a bit jumpy but overall I much prefer the layout of the new one to the old one. I always found the original Ohmicide UI to be too abstract and cramped with a lot of fiddly small knobs.

OhmicideS is a bit more conventional but better for it, imho.

I'm not a huge fan of using external modulators for things. I have both Ableton and Bitwig which are both very capable of that kind of thing but there's something about using external modulators that breaks the workflow for me.

I'm also a big fan of the "last touched parameter" modulation system that's in OhmicideS. The cross modulation options are also very cool. I would love to see a sidechain and midi note control for the envelopes though.

Guys, have anyone tried this plugin in Ableton 12 on Windows 11?

I'm experiencing quite a huge DAW GUI lag when the plugin's GUI is shown:

...and quite fatal GUI glitches:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/113nnMe ... sp=sharing

I love the original Ohmicide, so I wanted to support the developer by instant buy, but so far it's proving to be a mistake. I have one report from someone on Ableton's discord that it's laggy on MacOS too.

It's not doing the same thing in Reaper or Cubase. But it looks like it somehow halts the Ableton's GUI thread. Could pls some of you help me by demoing this plugin on the same setup? (i7, gtx 1660 ti, win 11, Ableton 12.2.1) ...just so I kow if I should push the support more or if it's a problem on my side.

did you email ohmforce about this? i've not had any issues on Mac.

I did. They were reactive for a mail or two, but then I guess got flooded with support requests. 🤔
