Congrats to the top five!
Again it baffles me how different my perception is in quite a few cases from the results while others make sense to me.
All in all it is music and there is tons of taste involved.
Another very interesting round.
I am learning a lot through this. Cool.
Thanx for all the cool comments on Soundcloud.
Sorry, I was a little more off this time. I just replied to some of your very valuable inputs.

Wohoo, that's wonderful, thank you all! And a big Congrats to Viroo for a fantastic piece of music besides the leading top 5 placement and NeuKatalYst for an excellent comeback, but naturally to Z and Never, all brilliant results. There was a great deal of fantastic music in this round with fantastic sound designs, too. Works of art and some surprises, too.
Naturally, nobody can escape the taste thing ultimately, but I only use it to push music UP that I just like too much. When I love something as much as I loved TheSoundOfMerlin's "Cacoaphonia", which fulfils pretty much all criteria anyway, if you asked me, it gets the highest rating possible. When I appreciate the sheer raw emotional musicality and abandonment of worries, such as in ElVincente's piece, it's my heart that pushes this up one more slot. Let's not forget the stunning creativity and expertly realised experiment from Silverpants, pfff, amazing. Can't help that...
OH, the prize... eeek, let's see: NOTHING. I'll leave all choices to Viroo!
(snap) BIG THANKS to Richard for wrangling everything and an extra welcome back to BJ, too!

OSC is not about music tastes, but about the quality of use for a given synth! You don't "vote" for your favourite track, but you "rate" the quality of the result. How well was this synth used in terms of level of control, spectrum of sound (variety) and power of purpose. How fascinating or impactful was the creation. How good does it make the synth "look", I think. And only after all this should come your taste. When you don't like the music, but the above criteria are not in doubt, you don't rate the result low! Remind yourself: This is about the synth!whassup wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 12:22 am Again it baffles me how different my perception is in quite a few cases from the results while others make sense to me.

About the voting - you write as if it's an established fact about how one should vote. Whereas this is purely your opinion.
The guidance for voting is very brief and open:
"Voting is done by giving ALL submissions a score between 1-5 points (where 5 points is best)"
5 = Best. As vague as that!
It is entirely up to the voter how they decide what is "best".
What you (Mr T) describe is what YOU think is the best way to assess tracks (which is a valid opinion). But it is not the set way in the rules. I wanted to make that clear to newcomers.
Some people try to be objective. Some subjective. Both are equally within the voting guidelines. My opinion is that we could all be subjective - and the average result may approach a mythical objective score. Therefore i take a subjective approach and I don't mind that other people do too. But that is just my opinion.

this is clearly the objectively correct opinion.silverpants wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 9:18 am Mr T - you know I love you - but...

I think that in order to believe voting subjective is fine, you must not have the extreme reaction to music that some of us have? Some types of music really bother me. They seem almost unethical. I imagine most people can't comprehend how instrumental music could seem unethical but that's how it is for me. Or it's like they're blathering on about the most inane bullshit. Going on about how they have lots of money and everyone thinks they're hot... Ugh. If I just went ahead and went full on subjective I'd give some tracks 1's that really deserve 4's or 5's. So I can't do that. I have to try to be objective.

Yeah that's a good point Emp. Maybe I do have the luxury of feeling comfortable being subjective because I don't get many bad reactions to certain genres.empphryio wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:18 am I think that in order to believe voting subjective is fine, you must not have the extreme reaction to music that some of us have? At home for my listening pleasure I might listen to Abba, Pantera, Yes, Aphex Twin, Pet Shop Boys, Frank Zappa, Tchaikovsky, Mr Bungle...
I'm a broad church for sure.
Also in my OSC "keepers" playlist I can't think of a genre that isn't well represented. Trance, Metal, Jazz/Fusion, Doctor Bob, Industrial, Synth Wave, Experimental, blah blah. As long as I enjoy it or find it interesting - I stick it in and give it a high score.
If I only enjoyed listening to Trance music - then yes it would not be very useful if I gave everyone 1 and DaviDJ 5.
If that was the case - then I can see it might be worth me trying to set out some objective criteria to augment my extreme and exclusive taste.
Good point Emp.
Saying that. I don't try to push my subjective method on other people. I respect that you strive for impartiality. And now I understand why it is so important for you. Crack on, I say.
I'm fascinated that you can find some music unethical. Fascinating that we work in different ways.
Perhaps you have the same feeling as I did when I found out Daft Punk was all 70s disco samples and they write very little music themselves. I felt cheated. That did feel a bit unethical.
But I can't see how I could find an OSC track unethical.

There was a track once that placed high that just sounded downright smug lol. Sometimes I get very strange notions when listening to music. The fact it managed to convey smugness was very impressive though and I scored it high.silverpants wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:59 am Yeah that's a good point Emp. Some country music really bothers me. Recently went to an Irish restaurant. I go there a few times a year and try to pretend I'm in Ireland. But this last time the electronic jukebox played a steady stream of modern country music. Ruined the experience.
A lot of country music sounds like it's very humble, except it's announcing how humble it is.
Comes across very self-righteous and ironic. Not to mention wrapping itself in the flag. Not an OSC thing though.
But if anyone makes a humbly self-righteous patriotic OSC track I'll make sure to give it a high score.
