HOW TO add a Bus/Efected signal of drums without phase issues?

hi guys,

a stupid question but im trying to work out some more snappiness/oomph for my drums but for example when i got my layered snares/claps etc. and am happy with it and want to duplicate this signal and then heavily compress + optional distortion etc. and add is to my original signal maybe 30% or so i get phasing as i mix in the same signal of course.

how can i achieve it to add a modified snappy/compressed signal to my original bus without this phasing/chorusy result?

thx

Compress a duplicate... that's called NewYork-style compression?

Anyway, your compressed signal path seems to have some extra latency. If you add a 100% wet delay to the 'dry' copy of this track or bus, you can use that to compensate for phase issues.

it shouldn't phase, sounds like it's introducing some kind of uncompensated delay. Some compressors have a wet-dry option for this purpose. Some daws also have a tool for this, like in bitwig I'd just wrap it in an FX layer and turn the mix knob.

What is mostly affected by delay/phase shift with compression in a negative way is cymbals and hihats.
- cymbals are such a complex soup of harmonics that do that if processed

When compressor kicks in there is some kind of transfer function called "knee" that is affected by attack setting.
- so it's inherit there is a delay and thereby phase issue(or not issue but the effect you may want)

Sometimes you may want a chorusy effect on cymbals, but if not separate them to a different track before mixing with drums stuff.

You may get away with crossover filter with eq to stop cymbals entering compressor
- using send to a compressor track makes this easier, and just insert an eq before compressor
- then you can sum dry signal with wet signal as you find useful

Or use a separate instance of a drum library/synth for cymbals alone.

This is false.
