Same here, though I think there's a world of difference between playing like a virtuoso and being able to make a guitar part sound good.Uncle E wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 8:48 pmMany such cases. Not quite the same thing but this is one of my pet peeves about youtube artists, the ones that spend a week making a video of them shredding out to make it look like they just picked up the thing and ran with it. Sure, you shredded out. The rest of your band hates you, but cool vid bro.zerocrossing wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 9:05 pmSame here, though I think there's a world of difference between playing like a virtuoso and being able to make a guitar part sound good.Uncle E wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 8:48 pmMany such cases. The other is channels about 5 year old virtuosos who are about a decade away from being burnt out stoner dropouts still pissed at their parents for pushing that music shit on them.

Ok bro. Someone better call up all the sim companies and tell them stop releasing new ones then. Amplitube had it nailed at AT3 and IK at GR3 also etc etc.dunno why they are bothering tryna dev new tech on and on.its done baby! We are thereharddaysnight wrote: Mon Jul 21, 2025 6:07 am Plugins matched real amps in every way like a decade or more ago.
Scuffham's S-Gear was the first to do it right - crossed the line for me. Been fine with plugins ever since.
You can tell who's prehistoric by their opinions on this matter.
Interesting you mentioned SGear. They did manage to get something right in there vs the others.

I love how you're pretending to be upset or whatever whilst writing up a post that just agrees with what I said.
Yes, S-Gear did do something right compared to the others.
That's what I said.
It was at that point that the real amp v simulation debate was wrapped up, amp sims "got there", and now it's purely subjective.
Dinosaurs can cry all they like, and make up whatever garbage they want - as they already have - but the fact is, once S-Gear came along, amp sims reached the point where they sounded and felt like an actual amp.

I listened to a few dozen Mary Chapin Carpenter songs last night, many of them big hits. I think the players, skilled as they are, follow your philosophy, and just added a bit to the conversation, without taking over the show. Careful phrasing, embellishing the main theme, and not trying to steal the showzerocrossing wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 8:09 pm I hold my own and can keep things simple but well executed.

I didn’t agree? I made a point relating to your statement : ‘Plugins matched real amps in every way like a decade or more ago’ .harddaysnight wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 11:51 pm I love how you're pretending to be upset or whatever whilst writing up a post that just agrees with what I said.

If this was true , then devs wouldnt be releasing new generations of amp sims like crazy every few years since with new tech still trying to make it more “real” ? Neural networks. Machine learning. Profiling , better IRs, Fluid IRs , yada yada.
It can’t have been “there “ a decade ago?
Sheeit, Bogren have a plug-in ,IRDX only recently that supposedly adds more “realism’ and dynamics to cab simulation.
I’d say traditionally modelling hit a point back then for sure and has pretty much plateau’d until recently with profiling tech being cheaper and now free.
SGear is smoother on the ears than the others of that ilk. That’s all I meant.

Call me whatever you want, ad hominem always works you know. I did pretty much only plugins and modelling amps for a couple of years. Until I plugged in my cheap Marshall MG100HCFX solid state amp I had only used once, as I thought it sounded crap when I first got it, just to check everything worked with selling it in mind. It sounded so much more real than all the plugins and modelling amps, not better in the sense it still did sound like a cheap solid state amp, definitely better in the sense that it responded much better to my playing and, as I wrote, sounded real
I have nothing against plugin amps, I will still use them for some purposes, they can't fully replace real amps just yet though

I have.
Amp sims nearly always sound better than tube amps through miked cabs.
Amp sims sound more or less on par with tube preamps that are not overdriving.
Overdriving tube preamps does still sound better, though amp sims are not bad.
This is just my experience. My experience is also primarily bass amps.
Note that I am saying “sounds as good as”, which is purely subjective. I am not claiming they sound the same - that’s another discussion.

When I was 8 years old I remember hearing Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and I was spell bound (this was the 60's) Then when I was 12 I thought all I'd ever have to do is master that song and I'd never have to learn anything again. When I got my first guitar I was clearly aware that I wasn't going to master the song over night. So I picked up basic guitar skills and built success upon success. Pop/Rock and jazz songs but never Jimi. Finally in the 90's a buddy of mine had a classic rock and blues band and I learned the song. I played it damn well, was well received but it wasn't as essential as I thought it would be.zerocrossing wrote: Tue Jul 22, 2025 8:09 pm

Hendrix can only be played properly if you’re on acid.tapper mike wrote: Wed Jul 23, 2025 4:11 pmWhen I was 8 years old I remember hearing Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and I was spell bound (this was the 60's) Then when I was 12 I thought all I'd ever have to do is master that song and I'd never have to learn anything again.
