Hello, I'm writing a magazine article on practical or interesting uses for plugins and looking for input from users. We're looking here for unusual or practical uses of specific plugins that can be shared. Preferably these should be either generic or freeware plugins.

For instance, some interesting heretofore unthought of use for a standard eq or compressor plugin that one might find in any host platform (Cubase, PT, Sonar, Nuendo, etc)

Alternatively, some interesting repeatable effect with a freeware plugin. We will avoid things that have a basic description of "really messes up the sound" or "makes it sound really spacey". We are looking for practical, usable, repeatable processes so that we can all build up a library of usable processes.

These may or may not be used in an upcoming article for Muzik ETC. Appropriate credit will be given for original ideas I was unaware of that get used.

Pugins (ordered as in the chain)

ArcDev Cyclotron: Choose a preset that mess the sound a lot and with lots of variations (the default preset is a good start)

Elevayta ConvoBoy: load any sample on your library, not an IR made for it (preferably instrumental short sample)

Any compressor: Set threshold to -30dB and ratio to 12:1

Now, choose any sample and send it to the chain. You'll get instantaneous moving, interesting pads that doesn't sound like anything before.

I shouldn't give my 'secrets' away here, but here's one I find just way too much fun and must quit for new explorations.

Using Scuzzphuts 'PhutBoySlim'*, I get it to receive input from a bass VSTi (using Orions 'Receive MIDI' option) Setting and switching different 'chop amounts' as riffs play can create some very unique gating effects to a synth line, vocal sample, or drums.

*First issue, not revamped version available from Scuzzphut now. The older version is just a little more 'wonky' for my tastes. Though I'm sure the newer version can do the same and be more precise.
But to be 'unique', I stick with 'off the beaten path' stuff as a rule.

The rest I'm keeping under my hat.

mda plugs sound sooo sweet if you load dlls as raw data and then use this as a wav sample. < ouch >

i use them for cleaning the lavatory and training my dancing fleas.

altho i beleive what your looking for is more along the lines of hints n tips for plugs.
buy ext and load up any number of free delays or fx of choice to suit,the multidelay means one note can be made very interesting if delays are automated instead of the instrument

Speaking of mda...
I was recently able to obtain a nice scratchy organ sound with my guitar using three mda plugs, overdrive>dubDelay>RezFilter.
Load them up as inserts in that order and use the settings below.

Overdrive
Drive=52
Muffle=32
Output=0dB

DubDelay
Delay=44ms
Feedback=43
FbTone=-19
LFO Dep=59
LFO rate=3.16
FX mix=50
Output=0dB

RezFilter
Freq=33
Res=69
Output=0dB
Env>VCF=70
Attack=0.00415
Release=157
Lfo>VCF=39
LFO rate=0.39
Trigger=FreeRun
Max Freq.=75%

Changing the attack and/or the LFO rate on the rezfilter can help it work for your particular track.

true... I checked the guy's website but you have to register and stuff. too bad... but in case he decides to monitor this thread... I use stepanova's knockout for "constant noise" removal. just record a bit of the noise in question by itself. put the noise file and the vocals or whatever on knockout. pan the vocals left and the noise to the right. you can adjust the levels after that. if you want the noise to be reduced more just boost the volume of the noise itself. the good part... it's free!!

Well, in that case: Here's an oldy but a goody:

Take a basic good-quality reverb and crank the tail up to the highest setting, then play... whatever... through it. You'll more often than not get some interesting ambient washes which you can use as a background pad or further process/filter/mangle to make an instant new-age masterpiece.

Take a plucked vst, FL Plucked for example, or Ugo String Theory. pass it through Retrodelay and play with its parameters, including Reverb. You'll get fantastic psychedelic passages.
you can listen to it in 'echoes', in my soundclick page.

I actually thought this topic would've made a shit stream of ideas from everyone here at KVR? I didn't like the idea of registering either - and I like to see what other KVRers are up to. Maybe everyone else flooded this guys site already so he could justify 'hits' or something?

That's like coming into someones house, inviting them over to 'your house' so they can have a drink and tell you what 'their house' is like? But first they have to 'pick your lock' to come inside, while you're already in getting the drinks ready.

Didn't The Schmenge Brothers use to do that on SCTV?
