I'm not sure about creating the sound of a generation, but he does seem to be credited on a number of records where the sound is very clean and well produced. Which obviously is not a bad thing. And I've certainly got a lot of records that he's mixed
Having said that, he did Angel Dust (and the Real Thing), and that is certainly not a stab at commerciality!
One producer that did shape the sound of a generation is Ross Robinson. And that sound is Nu Metal.

People give Rick Beato a lot of grief around here but I like his take on things. He's talented and a decent interviewer. I don't agree with everything that he says of course, but I do think that he has something to say.

Sorry vurt, I did not mean to imply that you did. My response was not directed at you, just KVR in general. Your joke was funny enough.vurt wrote: Tue Jul 29, 2025 4:24 pmi didn't give him griefghettosynth wrote: Tue Jul 29, 2025 4:22 pm People give Rick Beato a lot of grief around here but I like his take on things. He knows his stuff and has the experience and knowledge to back it up. For me it's the criticism on more modern stuff, as it's a bit of a zero sum game. A counter argument could be made that any music he likes is not opera and therefore is not as emotional, not as complex, etc, etc. Not that I agree with that, but I don't think cherry picking is a worthwhile pursuit.ghettosynth wrote: Tue Jul 29, 2025 4:22 pm People give Rick Beato a lot of grief around here but I like his take on things. True enough, the 50's & 60's bubble gum music is just gawd awful..

Neither did I.
You certainly heard some albums he worked on.
Check his discography on wikipedia. Of that list I have (only) three in my cd collection: Nirvana - Nevermind, Rush - Test For Echo, and one of my fav albums of all times: Skunk Anansie – Post Orgasmic Chill.
The interview is long, but I found it worth watching. He's a nice guy.
Pro tip: listen at your mix at very low volume as well.

We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Well, following the Wiki to Nevermind, I see Cobain cited as the *voice of a generation* so maybe it follows.
I have certainly heard Smells Like Teen Spirit and Walk This Way, the other titles I don't know. I won't have seen the name on an album cover, which is where I will have, if ever.
Beato is extremely knowledgable, [yet] my interest in his channel is not high.
