New video renderer in Waveform has broken the plugin thumbnail rendering! The thumbnails are just black and white.

Post

I have this problem as well where plugin thumbnails are only being captured for internal tracktion plugins (8 band equaliser / subtractive etc) and not for vsts. I've tried turning plugin sandboxing on and off and also changing the renderer from software to the newer one and all of the steps listed by the tracktion bot (customer service) bot on the webpage and not had any luck either. It's a minor bug and not essential but it would be nice to get it fixed.

I urgently suggest to make aware the Tracktion staff about such misbehavior, if by the answers of the bot the issue could not be solved. Send a bug report, maybe with screenshots, to their support. The bot will give you the address where to send such report to.
Unfortunately, the experience is that they do not monitor this forum and will not take note of such things being shared here with other users, and that it is not the most likely to receive a feedback on a bug report. But at least it will be in their "zen" based support desk system and chances are elevated there being noticed by the staff and not only a bot.

I'll send them a bug report then with screen shots and a link over here.

Windows 10 / Waveform 13.5.8 - plugin thumbnails for me are being generated as nothing but black. It's possible this has been happening for a while. I'm finding some plugin thumbnails from 2023 that are black. I've never actually used the plugin preview before, so I wouldn't have noticed.

BTW, the images can be found here on Windows:
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Tracktion\Waveform\Plugin Images\

EDIT: Some of the very old black thumbnails might have been from problematic plugins. I tried WF 12.5.21 and it generates thumbnails properly. I re-installed the oldest version of WF 13 I could find (13.3.6) and it generated black thumbnails.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

The same thing happens on my end (plugins are showing as black) whether you do it from plugin scan settings window or from the visual plugin selector. I'm pretty sure this must be some minor issue that they missed in beta testing.

If they dont respond by Monday I'll keep emailing them daily until they do reply :)

This is how it looks on my end anyway, not good.

I think the devs do browse these forums, but don't post as much as some people would like.

Either way I am sure they will fix this.

Waveform has got a lot better for bug fixes and regular updates imo than it was a few years ago.

It's a pretty minor thing anyway, as most of the time I just use the browser for plugins but the visual plugin selector is good for people who are more visually drawn to things.

It's been a week since emailing their customer service tema and no reply. For a company that is pretty poor. Waveform need to step up their game anyway now Studio one is available for it's new price I can't see anyone choosing waveform over studio one at the same price.

First of all, I agree that Tracktion hasn't been great at dealing with support requests. However, I just wanted to chime in and say that different people have different wants and also experiences. Not only is Waveform preferred for those who just plain prefer it but bugs crop up only when they crop up. That is to say, the number of times I have wanted to see the plugin thumbnails since they added the feature is zero. The last bug I reported (comp takes not working) was addressed pretty quickly.

There are probably bugs and annoyances in StudioOne that happen to bother only a few people and don't get addressed quickly enough, too. And there are likely many people who don't bump up against those issues and don't care. I get the impression that when people have an issue they think that it's happening universally and is universally a bother and that's rarely true. I've had bugs that only happened for me and only on one of my computers.

Anyways, keep pressuring them. This bug is silly and seems to happen for everyone, though not everyone uses the feature.

I think we should start a bug tracking thread here. People can post their request number, a description of the problem, and keep track of the status.

Absolutely other daws have issues and updates that don't please everyone. Numerous times I've heard youtubers using 'bigger name' daws mutter 'please don't crash', or seen people moaning after an update that their wants weren't met. Some big daws don't even do PDC properly.
It is annoying when you have to wait a version to see something important (to you) fixed, I understand that. (Rendering metadata/auto tempo/auto pitch/all that baloney with no option to switch off in version 12🤬)
Waveform seems to be one product alongside Tracktion Engine (and Juce?) and maybe gets a certain allocation of time spent or contracted out per update (only an observation, I don't know for sure.) Figbug used to do a bunch of tidy up stuff and I didn't see him around during this last update (again, only an observation)
But, for all that, the core product is pretty solid compared to some earlier versions, and development is steady. One improvement I think they could make is to extend beta testing for new stuff out to users a bit earlier to catch more real world bugs.
