Sadly, an SY77 is quite different from an SY99.

Oh, I thought the differences are mainly the number of internal AWM samples, RAM size and some fx like the leslie and the exciter are missing? I must admit though that I quite often used the exciter...... A very gritty sound as far as I remember.

I don't know the technical differences, I only know that when you load an SY77 patch into an SY99, it will sound quite different, even when no effects are used.

I had a Yamaha factory service rep tell me that even the TG77 rack mount synth and the SY77 keyboard synth had a reputation for sounding at least slightly different. Apparently, some folks thought the TG77 rack mount unit sounded a bit cleaner. I think the TG77 used a different DAC, which might have been a little newer, along with a few misc. differences in the analog circuitry. I've owned both a TG77 and an SY77, but never at the same time. So, I can't speak definitively on whatever differences might exist between those two particular models. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who actually has both. Is there really a noticeable difference between a TG77 and an SY77?

I had a Yamaha SY85. Is that like it?

If anyone is interested, I have a '99 here and can look at the analog section's components to suss which opamps are used. It might take a little bit of time - the unit is already apart for maintenance, however.

Edit: I also have the SY99 service manual/schematics, and I just found the SY77 set so I'll see if anything obvious shows up in a comparison between the two.

It has some things in common, but the SY85 only plays sampled waveforms. The FX section might also be similar, but I'm not certain exactly how similar.

The SY77, TG77, and SY99 will play sampled waveforms, and they have an FX section, but they also have an FM synth engine in addition to their sample (rompler) engine.

Sheaf said that the beta list is closed.
Thanks for letting me know, I must have missed this message. Could you point me to it? I could not find it.

Thanks for all the offers to test! It's appreciated. Between all the offers going back to the first pages of the thread and my email inbox I've got more potential testers lined up than I can handle right now, so I'm not going to include everyone.

I also decided to separate my plugin operation from my music, so I made a new label and website for the product: https://strydeaudio.com/sway. Still a work in progress.

How is the beta male testing going?
