way too many and varied genres these days.
i can't even decide what genre my own music fits into.

but how about:
experimental.
soundscapes.
rock.
acoustic.
dance-oriented.
chill-out (or ambient).

oh and just plain, all-out, full-on weird.

and all of those genres could have subgenres within them.
just suggestions, mind. :)

I believe Chinese and Indian music is the most popular.

experimental

note: over the years I've seen more people explain their music as experimental when they didnt have a clue what they were doing in the first place and just made a collage of noises... which isnt really what I'd consider experimental but I guess is in the broadest sense of the term.

0. bad (ex: trance or transe whatever, ambient, techno, rock, most of jazz...)

1. good (ex: choir, orchestration, pop, some of jazz...)

x. don't care (ex: the rest of jazz, celtic, ethnic...)

WTF? :o :o   :-o :o

Ah ah, gotcha :D: 'Good' is 'Bad' and 'Bad' is 'Good', right? And 'Don't care' actually means 'I love it', right? (See? You can't fool me :D )
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.

Genres. I hate categorizing music into genres . . . I know, stupid of me to put "ambient" in my name but that's a different story.

I always wanted to see sites with a set of dials you twiddle:

Danceability (Not At All to Totally)
Tempo (Free to Hyper)
Mood (Depressed to Manic)
Atmosphere (Dark to Blissful)
Instrumentality (A Capella to Instrumental)
Technolgy (Acoustic to Electronic)
Conventionality (Ethnic to Experimental)
Tolerance (Exact to Blurry--i.e. how exactly should the song selection follow the above values)

That kind of thing. Set the dials to your desired settings and . . . presto! There's a bunch of songs for you to choose from.

Nice concept emdot, I am surprised no one has thought of implementing it – actually the dial idea would novel concept for rating synths, due to the nature of the guis.

This is very much a mass consumption approach and could be aimed at users of itune type gadgets.

The idea of classification is still an awkward one, though I like the simplicity of your scale – its broad to actually work and be understood – not too sure about the dial aspect but it is doable.
