There's speculators, and there are micro-penised compensators. Not mutually exclusive, I suppose.

I remember when the PRS Dragon was first released and sold for $50,000 There were only going to be 50 ever released and they'd never make them again (or so was told) I thought my god can any guitar cost that much, should any guitar cost that much. Should the guitar be locked in a vault?
The originals have not been a wise investment strategy.

Anything you invested in the S&P500 would be worth considerably more now and it would have paid dividends.

Even if I had the money,I'd never buy an instrument as an investment, per se. Having said that, I could now get more than what I paid for my 3 Martins. But if I had seller's remorse, replacing my D-28 would be 4300€ now, new; my OM-21 is 3800€ now. I paid 2100€ in 2013-14 for each of them.

I like George Benson. Even owned one of his signature ibanez guitars. I like Johnny Smith especially his rendition of Moonlight in Vermont.
I don't like them both enough to buy George Benson's Gibson Johnny Smith for $1,000,000.00

A friend of mine worked for the Christie's Auction House (she did the Eric Clapton auction). In her experience, collectible guitars and art are just another way for investors to diversify. Her own father owns a mint condition 1961 Strat that is now worth 5X what he paid, plus he's had the enjoyment of playing it for the past 25 years (he's an actual player, not a collector).

I was surprised when "Blackie" didn't sell for that much compared to the prices paid for famous guitars thereafter.

People can ask whatever price their little delusional brains can think of.
Won't sell at that price unless as P.T. Barnum used to say, "There's a Sucker born every minute."
Value is a very subjective thing.

youre paying for owned a played by, fan memorabilia. things can get stupid there.
many years ago, i went to see the stone roses reunion at heaton park. the day after, there was mud, and jars of air, from the event, on ebay. some of which went for not far off a hundred quid.
if thats the going rate for some mud from a field they played in, a guitar played by one of them, would probably go higher...
although, the stone roses do at least paint their own equipment. so its art too.

Nice, tho it’s not really about the style, it’s about the construction of the real one.tapper mike wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 11:37 pmCopies can be had dirt cheappekbro wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 11:18 pm I dunno, next time I got 300 grand lying around…

If I'm reading it right, Daves ex guitar tech now desperately needs to scramble a lot of money.
Possibly he's facing eg exorbitant medical bills coming up, and has no insurance covering that.
