A lot of interesting and cool sounding movement in there. Very promising.El°HYM wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 1:02 pm A short Drone impression, using KONTRAST recent Beta version. Wait for more...
Dawesome Kontrast. Wavetable synth. Coming Autumn 2025.

Neat. I wonder what all controls one will have over the read head and how int interacts with the data. Could be very cool. Could just sound like a wavetable. Either way. Dawesome is a great company making great stuff.

All these can be modulated, of course.Ah_Dziz wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 5:51 pm Neat. I wonder what all controls one will have over the read head and how int interacts with the data. Could be very cool. Could just sound like a wavetable. Either way. Dawesome is a great company making great stuff.

Thanks!! That's super cool. What happens when the scan head only covers say 1/3 of the spectrum? Is the sound filtered or is the scanned spectrum stretched / remapped to fill up the output? Having flexibility in the playback of wavetables is really neat and something many developers don't really get into. I'd love to see something with tons of options for windowing and overlap and fft size with onboard resampling options etc. People tend to put more into the wavetable creation end and less into the possibilities of playing the data back. Anyway good luck. The synth looks cool.

I like how companies are using "autumn" to describe the upcoming time of year, instead of using "fall," which could be easily confused with the "fall of civilization."

The visualisation is not a spectrum!!!Ah_Dziz wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 6:32 pm Thanks!! That's super cool. What happens when the scan head only covers say 1/3 of the spectrum? It is like a normal wavetable, just not in the typical 80's-like green pseudo 3D raster lines!
Traditional:
high amplitude values = mountain tops
low amplitude values = valleys
Kontrast:
high amplitude values = white
low amplitude values = black
The grayscale image gives you much more precision and detail about your audio!
Per default the scanline is a vertical line - this is the normal "slice" in traditional wavetable synth.
But now you can apply bend, shorten, lengthen, spiral, petal, etc to the scanline ...

That makes sense. So the line basically represents the phase of a single cycle of playback then. And all the other bits introduce phase distortion to the playback. Nifty stuff.

You can do phase distortion, but it is more than that: the shape often is two dimensional and hence scans points in a two dimensional area.Ah_Dziz wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 7:39 pm That makes sense. Sounds like the mechanics of it are beyond my pea brain comprehension, but it sounds cool and Dawesome stuff always delivers so I am definitely looking forward to playing with it.

No worries - KONTRAST is extremely intuitive to use!cake builder wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 8:31 pm Sounds like the mechanics of it are beyond my pea brain comprehension, but it sounds cool and Dawesome stuff always delivers so I am definitely looking forward to playing with it.
You don't need to understand the mechanics of the engine: you simple start dropping some sounds / wavetables and after a few minutes your brain has learned the connection between image and sound automatically.
You then mess around with the sliders for the shape - and you simply see and feel how sound and shape relate to each other. Our brains are excellent in recognising spirals, circles, petals etc, and now you can utilise this ability for creating sounds.
It is rather a synth for musicians, then for engineers.

It doesn't look like it's spectral in any traditional sense. Price was quoted somewhere in this thread.

it isnt spectral in any sense - its wavetables. From what I can see there is a two dimensional array of numbers and then a trajectory over that array that reads out as a waveform. Presumably something like an average is output coz some of the figures have more than one value at a point in time.
Seems at first glance to be like a really large almost infinite wavetable with the ability to jump around to different waves whilst altering the frame size being read out. With beautiful interaction design to make that all very intuitive
