What makes a plugin "dated"?

It's not exactly relevant, but I feel like any plugin that gets in the way feels "dated".
I'm over needing to login, or authorisation bs that needs to happen after the first time I login, I hate middle-men plugins like Kontakt or Spitfire LABs etc..
Anything that has any kind of step in between me loading it onto a track, and making music, is immediately "dated" to me, so I don't use them.

I would say that recent modern plugins nail more and more a realistic harmonic depiction of what they emulate as well as adding a little depth, 3dness sort of speak ; that is pretty hard to find in ancient plugins, they often sound flatter and less detailed IMO (even though there will always be old little gems fighting the passing of time).

I have been digging through the reaktor stuff to get polyphonic drums and drum machines with ratcheting not much to speak of outside vcv rack and reaktor. It is hard to say no to 20 years of free reactor plugins... I just released a bunch of vcv rack pro selections for one so that I can use polyphonic inside the drum machine and things like ratcheting with the same sounds outside it's sequencer. I think alot of the 32 bit synthedit plugins are dated because virus protection doesn't like the exterenal stuff and alot of it crashes but I will use 32 bit stuff if it works my thing is that I have to be sorted including vcv rack, reaktor vst's exc...

I think what makes a plugin realy dates is only a nonresizeable window and an abandoned format/development. But sometimes those can also verify as retro

Poly-Ana definitely sounds dated because of the horrible UI. I definitely woulnd't touch that and there are many much better alternatives!zerocrossing wrote: Tue Mar 18, 2025 9:19 pm There's no one answer to this. It could be a number of things. If it's an analog emulation, it can sound dated due to noticable digital artifacts in the sound, or a certain dullness. I'd say that Poly-Ana sounds very dated in comparison to something like Repro or UAD's Minimoog.

No, it looks dated because of the horrible UI. It sounds dated because it aliases like a stuck pig if you try and do anything somewhat fancy. Even with the oversampling on. It's just not good in comparison to everything that's come since and it wasn't continuously developed. The developer has a very, "I'm always right" attitude," so I'm sure he thinks he's created perfection that doesn't need any improvement, but that's why almost no one uses Polyana anymore.lickable_urinal wrote: Tue Nov 04, 2025 12:19 amPoly-Ana definitely sounds dated because of the horrible UI.
