even though he is under the impression that his words are insufficient i reckon that clueless (the joint progenitor of this contest) puts it best ...

What do you love about music?
What really fires you up about it?
What got you into it in the first place?
What are the sounds you want to make or hear?
Right?
Well do that then
Reach deep within thy souls, children, and give us all you've got!
How's that?
Anyone know what I'm trying to say?
Be yourself, and for the love of music.
Or something
That's 'it'.

so ... with the hope that at the end of this longer contest we will have the material to maybe put together a KVR AUDIO CD (certainly for online distribution if not a physical product) in tribute to john peel and his absolute passion for music ... its time to put away all the usual pretence and stylistic posing of these contests and just make the music your heart and soul and guts have always wanted you to ...

(in the spirit of this one perhaps your voting should be a reflection of this and bollocks to technical ability and polished production ??? )

... please note the extended deadlines (to allow for the longer track length and to give me a break over new year) and altered limits on track length (along with the need to provide a shorter version too) ...

... at the end of this the winners will get their usual prize stuff but clueless and easybugger and me will also try to bash out a way of coming up with a tracklisting for the hoped for CD ...

sonoma wire works wrote:Sonoma Wire Works, developers of cutting-edge user interface design and software for the next generation of music products, have offered to give a free copy of Sonoma 7 VST effects plug-in to the winner of the December/January contest as well as the the contest that ends in February. Sonoma 7 VST is a comprehensive set of seven great sounding, fully optimized effects like auto-wah, multiband compression, modulation, delay, reverb, and parametric EQ. By combining all seven effects into one plug-in, musicians get convenient access to multi-effect presets, and the ability to instantiate more effects without using up extra insert or send locations. Each effect can be enabled or disabled separately, and by using a single window, screen clutter is minimized.
Free demo available here: http://sonomawireworks.com/effects.php

Hmm, since no one else is entering...

A bit of indie sludgepop then with chorus nicked from somewhere (can't place it though) featuring jaaaaathchords :-o , standard poor mans ELO faux beatles middle 8 (these contests seem to bring out the worst in me :hihi: ), and piss poor Mick Ronson style guitar solo :o

free of it all

and for the dialup nutnecks;

free of it all

This tune is kind of a hybrid with big grooves,
orchestral pieces, vocoded voices, piano, synth
and effects. I've tried to put it all in there

yeah, its pretty short.. I wrote it today.. cant think of anything else to add to it and am not good (at this point) at creating diversely melodic goa :hihi:

Nevertheless, I decided to enter it anyways as it does indeed describe music to me and is pretty much to the best of my abilities.. this is me, this is my music. :)

Bismillah Irahman Irahim

Greetings from Norway!

My entry is a classic trance track, called Pulse of Creation.

NB: I made the mp3 before deciding to enter the contest, and I am not currently in my studio, so I don't have the option to make a dialup friendly version. Also it was encoded with variable bitrate.

This is sort of where music started off for me - An escape from reality.

With this, I hope you can hear my influences and see why I wanted to make electronic music. I'd be happy to tell you what I used in the Gossip thread. Enjoy.

One of my first musical epiphanies was when I heard Steve Stevens' guitar on Harold Faltermeyer's "Top Gun Anthem" (from the Top Gun movie, duh) which is the (hopefully) obvious influence for my entry.

This song was what made me pick up a guitar in the first place back in the good old 80ies.

Lacking Mr Stevens' guitar chops I opted for a less Van Halen-like solo and tried to incorporate my main theme with some more modern sounds...hope it works better than my last entry which got zip votes. :hihi:

The drum parts are rather military and parade-like, which is intentional...

Okay, nuff said, time to take off:

Actually I've been trying to get something started ever since the theme got announced; thing is everytime I did start I ended up with 15+ minutes :?

Why I feel my love for music shines through this; well for one I am crazy about sounds and sequences. I love to deeply explore arpegio's and repeating sequences. Another part that shines through is my roots as a house-DJ; I've always loved getting people to dance and enjoy themselves. In this particular song I combined my love for both, a slowly evolving piece that ranges from ambient to near drum 'n bass. Most of the sounds were born from my latest live-track sekwensies which is another thing I love about music; the live factor. I think I quite succeeded in pushing this as far as I could go.

Anyhow; here's the tools:
Cubase 5.1
eXT as a plugin (containing z3ta/z3ta fx/mobilohm in a pre-setup)
Fizmo is doing the soft organey sounds
SY85 adds some reverbed noise
vst: Anamark (pads), drumatic3, Pentagon (delicious bass) and Invader (odd sounds)
FX: Just a few; Ruby Tube (silverspike), bionic delay and endorphin most other fx were onboard in the vst's.

I am editing this because I felt I should give credit to the developers who have changed my life with their cheap, and/or free products. I had no idea this stuff existed as recently as last August and I feel like a kid in a candy store all the time these days.

So anyway, I used Tracktion as my host; making happy use of its native (and much maligned) sampler for all of the untuned percussion sounds.

The string pads are: Crystal, Synth1, and StringSynth.

I made extensive use of DigitalFishPhones Dominion and Floorfish plugs.

And of course the poor hobbyist would be LOST without the wonderful Kjaerhus Classic series of plugs, which were used again and again.

The actual midi source files were written using an old notation editor called Midisoft Studio 6, which I have never been able to leave behind.

I think that covers it.

i would have loved to compose a full orchestral atonal piece recorded with real musicians but i had no time, no money, and probably no talent either. so i focused on another part of the answer to the thematic questions: what? the sex&warm feeling, the hypnotic rythmic, the tribal quest, the ritual, the mystic, the fusion... body and soul... someting like that... and a touch of experimental wankerage, because i love it, too... :D

My entry for the winter contest:

Come full version

Come (2min excerpt)

It's hard to describe why this song comes from my soul. It's definitely not the music I grew up listening to or playing. However, it is a song that I put a lot of effort into and some of myself into as well.

In some ways this song marries both old and new in music for me. My primary instrument is the guitar and the lead and rythym guitar parts capture the love and feel I have for playing this instrument. The keyboard and electronic parts of the song show the recent branching out I've done in trying new instruments and styles of music.

As a side note, I'm not a new member, I just changed my name. I use to go by DrakeBP, but decided to change my name to one that I'm using with a band and is also a bit more musically oriented.

Hey hey looky here. I'm entering a kvr contest again. 8) :-o It's been way too long, and I'm thrilled to present this little indie pop number. Quite a struggle to write, lots of failed attempts at finishing the arrangement until everything fell into place a few nights ago -- couldn't sleep for two hours after with the rush of accomplishment. I guess that's what I love about writing music... I made this. It didn't exist before. Now it does, and it's mine to share. Hope you like it, and if not, that's okay, because I do.  :hihi:
