Quick survey on Generative AI Music Tools – for my Master Thesis

Hey folks,
I’m writing my Master Thesis at TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology) about how Generative AI music tools (like Suno, Udio, Boomy, Stable Audio, etc.) are changing music production and consumption.

I’d love to get some input from musicians. No academic jargon, just your honest opinions. The survey takes ~5 minutes, is anonymous, and would help me a ton.

The questions cover stuff like:
Have you used AI music tools? Which ones?
Do you think the quality is “good enough”?
Would you consider using AI in your workflow? What would have to change for you to adopt it?
Do you have a general aversion against AI in music, and why?
What’s your music background (genre, amateur/pro, do you release on Spotify, etc.)?
How do you currently use (or not use) AI tools?
The answers will only be used for research purposes (my thesis). If I quote anyone, I’ll anonymize it completely.

No, I have never even thought about using AI for anything, for me LIFE is about developing your own imagination and skills in whatever area you are working.

As retired result in not in forefront, but the journey. This is luxury of course compared to produce results in the shortest possible time for a living. So can understand AI can be important for many.

Being as old as not even used mini calculators until the very last year in school, I developed really good inhead math to estimate result. Very usable through life.

I can imagine that using external tools for everything could diminish human imagination and skill on the long run. Very much a hype in this sense.

The last 20 years have degraded the education here in sweden in the sense they stopped teaching for gaining knowledge for student. Some really silly idea that companies would employ people just being able to use a internet search engine and not a high level of knowledge.

I sense that the same thing might happen with AI that is a hype right now and then seing limitations and what is destroyed by overusing it.
- you feed delicate information into a system that is not your mind or your companies interest either
- if companies do this they will teach AI about what they are doing!!!!

Just a week ago it was revealed that our prime minister use AI for some purposes.
- this would mean he reveals things about his thinking too to this AI platform

AI may have some serious impact and then hit back at those using it unwisely.

But using information already on internet I see nothing to be worried about.

There is a problem in high education that big part of students results are duplicates and just copied and such.
- an AI could help with feeding a certain study and ask what parts might be duplicate copies
- so it could help reveal fraudilent results by student
- that could be a good use

I obviously gave it a whirl at the start to see how it would fare. But it's really terrible in creating a long-form work and not repeating itself like 5000 times.

different outcomes. We have taken some of your questions and

No.

Because no one person has composed exactly "that song." The
human emotions, the sweat of composing, writing, performing, etc.,
are only indirectly present in the song — if at all — by piecing

business and music as a whole, and in its own way, wipe it out.

Why?

Because AI-generated songs devalue the genuine composition of
songs by real musicians. Why should a major label pay a musician
when AI can do it too — even for free?

AI will take over composing, and musicians will become obsolete
in the business. All that matters now are catchy pop songs that
many people enjoy — generated and optimized by AI.

The "real" musician is left with only an autistic bedroom and hobby
room existence, which no one else will be interested in anymore.

5. Have you made music using AI? What was your experience?

No.

We - the band "enroe" - indulge in the old craft that exists:
genuinely composing ourselves, playing ourselves, recording
ourselves, mixing ourselves.
