Melodic Techno / House - Sustained bass

Hello !

I am struggling with something that sound really basic and that makes me crazy !

In some "classic" melodic house or techno stuff, there is a kind of "sustained bass" (that sometimes also work as a lead) that sound pretty basic but I fail when trying to create similar sounds. (Mine end sounding like reese basses or are to low or to high but never sounding right).

(Tried to find some tips on it through the web but I can't even name it correctly so that makes it even more difficult)

Here is a simple example : (starting at 1:58)

When I search for "sustained bass" I only find tutorials on Drum&Bass or Dubstep...

(btw I am on Ableton 12 Suite and own Serum 2 and u-He Diva)

This is a Reese bass.
Basically a supersaw with a filter set quite low

Don't know which sound exactly you're referring to but there is a "sustained" detuned bass that's heavily side chained to the kick. A bit part of the texture is all the other droning sounds that are layered with it. Pulling those pads out and adding in a big pumping bass makes for a good transition. I usually make these kinds of bases with the detuned layer 2 octaves over the kick, a square/pulse wave one octave over the kick and a nice solid sine under that. The trick is getting those levels right so that the bass frequencies of the bass sound don't conflict with the kick or take away its impact. You want the ducking to pull the lowest part of the bass completely out when the kick hits. The middle osc will do most of the work here. Adding some pwm with a tempo synced lfo can make things interesting too.
