I prefer to hear it from the horses mouth, not some dweebs online who don't have a clue.

Maybe do some research before posting nonsense statements

(Obviously I'm not taking about drums...)

The quote at your link says

"Then, the SH-101 opened the door for us. We realized as young musicians we needed a synth with a sequencer in it. When I saw the SH-101 I said, ‘That’s what we need.’ We saved up for it and it was the answer to all our prayers. We did all of The Total Age on an SH-101. That sound established us"

No where does it say that's all they used. If they layered a SH-101 with a DX7 that would still mean all of the record had SH-101 on it despite the fact it also had other things

If every song had a track on it that was SH-101 that would also indicate that all of "The Total Age" had SH-101 but that doesn't mean that's all they used

In any case the DX7 most certainly was used Bon Harris said here for example

"Our main sound of That Total Age was the Roland SH-101 with FM-sounds being added in the studio from a Yamaha DX7."

Sure but they also used a DX7.

Much like you

So what did the horses mouth say?

Again, here is what Nitzer Ebb Co-Founder Bon Harris had to say about it. You don't get more from the horses mouth than the Co-Founder of the band

"Our main sound of That Total Age was the Roland SH-101 with FM-sounds being added in the studio from a Yamaha DX7."

Again the horses mouth said the DX7 was used. That didn't come from dweebs online, who think it was only SH-01, it came from the co-founder of the band.

Apparently they liked the sound of FM so much on the followup record he said

"For Belief, I bought a Roland System 100m, an Oberheim Xpander and a Yamaha TX81Z – so these are real characteristic sounds we must not miss on stage."

So not only did he like FM but it became a real characteristic sound he couldn't miss on stage

You can read the whole thing here

Maybe next time

I think that might be a good idea for you

I have a real good solution for you guys: just buy both Softube Model 82 and Plogue OPS7. Problem solved.

The horses mouth being McCarthy in early 90s when they played here and I spoke to them.

Cool story bro

I saw this recently on GearSpace. The use of the DX7, "as quiet as possible", is discussed.

That said, and for the context of this thread, it's a very sparse album. There are more than a few tracks created with "just a 303" as well. Just sayin.

Are we all settling in now for 10 pages of irrelevent argument over what Nitzer Ebb did or did not do?? :D

I dunno. I just posted a video. That said, the SH101 was the key analog voice on that album, so, it's not exactly irrelevant to discuss the album.

Also, I'm clearly not a true fan as today I learned that it's pronounced with a long "i" sound.

Also, I think that it would be cool to have a one synth challenge where you can use one synth model, but any properly limited implementation, so, the list of valid plugins should be discussed and decided on up front. But, the idea is that you have an SH-101 one synth challenge where you can use the hardware, or one plugin such as the model 82 as your one synth.

I like that idea. Hardware might be tricky to enforce however. Also, can I use all three different 101 plugins I have - Softube, TAL, D16 - or would I need to stick to one :)

Post

I'll only buy this plugin if Nitzer Ebb did indeed use the 101 exclusively on their first album. Otherwise it's a no go.

I’m old and used to own an SH but I don’t recall ever listening to NE before just now.

Sounds like mainly SH with some quiet DX. And drums and vocals.
I lost my heart in Cap de Creus

Why would we? The issue has been settled by the horses mouth. There can be no argument, but it's obviously important to you or you wouldn't have posted about it
