Hapax for control vst

Hello,
I'm looking for a hardware sequencer to control my VSTs in my DAW.
I was thinking about Hapax; it should be what I'm looking for.
But I was wondering if there wasn't a hardware sequencer more dedicated to controlling VSTs.
Hapax is widely used for hardware, so the hardware control part isn't essential; it's useful for my use.
I would also like the hardware sequencer to be able to control the Tekno VST as well.
Thank you in advance for your answers and opinions.

Hapax is awesome due to its instrument definitions and live chord mode. Its has 32 midi tracks too! Very easy to use and very fun.
The MIDI FX are awesome.
If you like MIDI FX stuff, you should use Bitwig Studio!

I went down this road a bit with the Torso T-1 and Korg SQ-64. The T-1 was a bit too weird for me and I never really figured it out, while the SQ-64 was too pedestrian and didn't do anything special. Hapax seems to be the best of both without those problems.
One silly but highly annoying issue was that I had to keep selecting all the parts, because my DAW only plays selected parts live. It might be a good idea to check how your DAW deals with that.

i like the Elektron digitakt for that.
for sequenzing the DT1 is still fine. Can be had cheap now 2nd hand.
Depends on ones usecases what fits, though.
To me, there is not much of a difference if one would midi-seq external HW or plugins.
The charakter of the Sequenzer itself remains same.
I´d say, chose from there.
Just check the sequenzers and look what feature sets they have.
Of course might some have a better internal "adjustability" vs. their midi settings. I was not running into problems with any of them vs. what i was doing.
Ahh, Hapax has many Midi outs. Thats a point. And iirc is it just over USB alone something like 4 single midi connectors, no ?
Elektrons have p-locking. That´s also a point

A big thank you for your answers and opinions.
I had thought about the Arturia products.
But as I would like to have a controller that can also control the vst Tekno, I thought about the grid of the sequencers (several tracks directly accessible for the drums) directly at the Hapax.
What do you mean select all parts?
I use Studio One Pro 7 as my DAW.
I wanted at one point to use Bitwig, really great modulations and creativity.
On the other hand, I really can’t get used to the interface and the modular system (grid) doesn’t seem that simple to use.
For that, Ableton Live is more refined and therefore clearer and more visual than Bitwig.
With the new version 6 of Bitwig, even if visibility is improved, the clarity of the interface is still for me not clean and clear enough.
Using the Elektron sequencer, very powerful but complex and the arrangement of the hardware sequencer annoys me just like the Arturia products.
I am coming back to the Hapax.
The hardware configuration compared to the sequencer’s grid, with the number of tracks available simultaneously, makes me return to the Hapax.
If there is hardware similar to the Hapax, I am interested.
I mean by that, simpler in relation to its operation and possibilities.
Even if the Hapax seems to be relatively simple compared to its many functions.

My DAW requires me to have all the parts selected for them to play MIDI input. I have to click the first part, hold shift, and click the last part. Can't even CMD+A to select them. Every time I edit or change something, I have to select them all again.Trancer wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 5:45 pm What do you mean select all parts?

I don't know if Studio One is better in that regard. It's worth checking.
Maschine is simpler and doesn't have the select-parts issue. I think you mentioned that you had Maschine before and liked it, but did you have Version 3? If you didn't, they added some nice Hapax-style MIDI functionality. If there is hardware similar to the Hapax, I am interested.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I don't know, to be honest.
I'll check that out.
Yes indeed, you have an excellent memory, you're very attentive.
I did indeed have a Maschine mk3, but it was the micro version.
I wasn't thinking about Maschine mk3 at all.
It could be a good idea indeed.
Even if the grid (pads) isn't as extensive as the Hapax, it could clearly be used for the Tekno VST.
Maybe a stupid question; I don't know enough about Maschine mk3 to be sure.
Can I configure, for example, the knobs and pads of Maschine mk3 and assign them to third-party VSTs?
I suppose it's possible via MIDI CC?
On the other hand, if I want to sequence a third-party VST like Sylenth1, Spire, etc. (using the Maschine mk3 step sequencer), is that possible?
I'd like to use it as a note sequencer.
This is possible with Hapax, and that's what I'm also looking for.

Regarding pads, you'll use the hardware in Keyboard mode.Trancer wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 6:23 pm Maybe a stupid question; I don't know enough about Maschine mk3 to be sure.

Regarding knobs, Tekno's controls load up pre-assigned. That said, the way they're lain out is not very logical and I don't see a way to change them. There are 16 pages of 8 parameters (128 total parameters) and each page is a random mix of parameters from different drums. In contrast, Nepheton loads up with no parameters assigned but makes it really easy to assign where I want, while Drumazon loads up with all parameters assigned in a perfectly logical order.
Yes.On the other hand, if I want to sequence a third-party VST like Sylenth1, Spire, etc. (using the Maschine mk3 step sequencer), is that possible?

I haven't been too deep into controlling plugins - but I've done some simple MIDI mappings to control and automate plugins. Works perfectly. There are some already made by other users, but mapping yourself doesn't take more than a few minutes.Trancer wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 8:19 am I would also like the hardware sequencer to be able to control the Tekno VST as well.

Thank you very much for your response and feedback.
A huge thank you to you, Uncle E. You always have clear, precise, and highly detailed answers.
I also have Drumazon 2.
Indeed, given the number of parameters, it's not easy.
It's a shame Tekno doesn't have the same assignment logic as Drumazon; you wonder why.
If a developer can do it, why can't others?
An excellent feature is the ability to use the pads (step sequencer) for step-by-step programming of my sequences with third-party VSTs.
Thank you also, DrGonzo, for your response.

You always ask interesting questions! The moment you asked, I thought "I'd like to know the answer to that, too."

Thank you for your kind words.
I try to ask simple questions, but as specific as possible regarding a solution adapted to my use.
In order to optimize my workflow and my use as much as possible, and to have the right equipment for my needs.
This way, I no longer get distracted, as has been the case far too often.
I thought about your idea for Maschine MK3, and it seems an excellent idea.
Especially since I now know, thanks to you, that I can use the step sequencer in Maschine MK3's step mode to create melodies with notes using third-party VSTs.
How should I configure Maschine MK3, Maschine, to use the Serum 2 VST with the step sequencer to create a melody?
I assume I have to select a VST, for example Serum 2, and use the Maschine MK3 pads as if it were a drum composition?
Except I'm using a VST instead of drums.
Thank you again for your help.

I'm getting back to you to tell you my choice.
I just bought the Maschine mk3.
I just hope a mk4 version doesn't come out in the next six months.
Another huge thank you to Oncle E.
