I have been given a Proteus 2000 and am wandering whether it will work with my other hard/ software.

I run Abelton Live 8.2. I have a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB soundcard and use a Roland Juno D as a controller.

I have connected the Proteus in the following way:

Focusrite Out - Proteus In A

Focusrite In - Juno out.

Proteus out - Juno In

Ableton is seeing midi and the Proteus is acknowledging the Juno. I'm not hearing any of the sounds from the Proteus.

I am inexperienced with P2k and think I am missing something with device drivers or something, as there is nothing in Ableton that suggests it knows the Proteus is there.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Maybe I'm thinking too basic here, but have you connected audio leads as well as MIDI? It's not clear from that description.

Anyway, make sure the P2k has MIDI in [doesn't need MIDI Thru or out unless your daisychaining more devices] and make sure the audio L/R outs of the proteus are connected to the Saffire. Then, just make sure you enable the correct audio inputs in Live.

Thanks for your response.

I am truly inexperienced, I have now attached l & r audio outputs from proteus to soundcard l & r inputs.

I can now play the p2k demo from my speakers but am still not getting any sounds of the presets and Abelton is not recognising it.

I just got it to work, within the Midi Modes section when Master button is pressed I changed the mode from multi to omni and I now get a preset sound.

How do you go about getting Ableton to recognise this?

Recognise what? MIDI is very basic. You send a Program Change to your hardware device, it makes a different sound. That's it. There's no two-way handshaking going on (except in SysEx, but let's leave that a while till you've got the basics).

I don't know the Proteus, but I imagine you'll want it in Multi mode as you can access more than one sound at a time. I imagine Omni mode is one sound at a time playable from any MIDI channel.

If the Proteus is, say, 8-part multi-timbral then you could play eight sounds at once. These would normally default to something like MIDI Channels 1 to 8. So assign Ableton to MIDI Channel 1 and you should hear Part 1 of the Proteus. Create a new track in Ableton and assign that to MIDI Channel 2 and you should be able to play a different sound on Part 2 and so on. You will need to send a Program Change message (0-127) and possibly Bank Change message from Ableton to access the different sounds.

If you store those Program Changes in your project next time you load up the Proteus should select the correct sounds.

for all of that I'd just record to the proteus rather then Ableton and only use ableton sync'd to the protues MMC

One thing about that emu hardware series to remember is it's not GM.
The drum mappings are different. I've got a emu XL-7 command station.
It's a lot easier to use then the rack mount variety.

Mr Arkadin is correct on all of the above. Omni is when you want to use the channel buttons. Assume you are playing without the rest of the hardware and only have a midi controller and the proteus. You could run everything on channel one from your keyboard then puch the channel button to accept it on the channel you have already specified for a sound (Like ableton) If on the other hand you wanted to do two part inventions you would assign which channel for which range on the keyboard and then use Omni mode in the proteus.

My XL-7 is fried from a misadventure with coffee. If I went that route again I'd opt for a PX-6

Proteus 2000 is great. going to have to do a Novation RemoteSL mapping for it to get at all the MIDI CCs and some sysex.
has anyone done that? willing to share?
