Hi all :) I've just released the beta for a conversational co-producer that assists with writing MIDI. It is designed for iterating through ideas so if you get stuck, want to extend something, or test out variations, it can help you out. Currently only works with Ableton 11 & 12. It works with both drums and melody. It is completely free, and if you do try it out, please let me know any feedback you have. Hope you enjoy!

I get a "network error" when using the M4L device in Ableton. As soon as I hit "Send to Maestro", the website opens with that message "Something went wrong".

Is there something I need to setup in Ableton?

I'm using Ableton Live 12.2 with the latest version of M4L.

Sorry that was your first experience! There was a small bug in the device that could sometimes cause issues with connecting to the service. It is fixed now. Re-download the device from the website to get the latest, fixed version. Hope you find it useful!

Does it work with the standard version of Ableton 12, or does it require Max for Live or the suite version?

Post

The device is a max for live device which does require the Suite version of Ableton. I'm currently looking for an alternative to M4L devices so any license of Ableton can use it, but it will take some tinkering to figure out the best way to use a control surface in place of the M4L device. I'll let you know when I create the control surface (hopefully tomorrow) so anyone with Ableton will be able to try it.

M4L can be purchased for use with the Standard version of Ableton without having to upgrade to Suite. But Suite includes some devices that aren't included in Standard---including some synths like Operator, Meld, and Granulator III and some audio effects like Roar, Echo, and Re-Enveloper. https://www.ableton.com/en/live/compare-editions/

While the MIDI data now arrives at the web interface, the "Connect to Ableton" button that's visible after one generation seems to be doing nothing.

The results are... ok. The four chords sounded a bit more playful, but even after changing the prompt, they remained the same, very sparse and robotic. I'd add more instruments to choose from to play the generated MIDI. Also maybe add parameters like note density or how much you want the results to stay in key or add out-of-key flavors.
