UAD Anthem - Very Good Sounding

Realistically I’m willing to pay $0 for this VST that does nothing unique or special.

When my demo was running out, I couldn't find any synth that can replace it. The closest I got was with UA's Minimoog and it lacks the modulations.

Really? I think Opal has one of the best, most intuitive, easy to work with synth interfaces I have ever seen. Sure, it would be nice to have a few combined destinations in the MM on occasion but that's a minor issue, really, given that you can do so much without having to use the MM at all. I only got it a couple of weeks ago but I can see it becoming one of my most used synths.

Anthem sounds great and looks really easy to work with, but I don't need it so I'm happy to wait until it's $49. UA sort of shoot themselves in the foot with their sales and discounts, although I am sure a lot of pros just buy everything without giving price a second thought.

Finally gone to the dark side and using UAD eh?

It's true Opals front panel is pretty good. In part I'm just missing the convenience of drag and drop modulation. It sounds incredible though. I think I struggled to make a particular sound once, which probably made me think it was tricky to program, but it is a good synth to tweak.

I'd say it's in the top three best sounding VSTs.

And amazingly it's $29.99 at the moment.

That's how I felt about it. I'm not even sure at this point if a developer could surprise me with something unique or special, at least in terms of features. At this point, I'm looking for unique tonal characteristics, and especially ones that get dirty in a pleasant way, and this is all that and a bag of chips.

Other c/r copy protection systems, besides iLok, are exactly the same, the manufacturer keeps the keys on a chain. It feels like you don't really own the license.

If that's how it feels to you, then you are wrong,. It's more like giving your spare set of keys to your neighbour - if you ever get locked out it's easy enough to ask your neighbour for the spares. It's off-site back-up of your licenses, nothing more sinister than that, and when I've needed them, iLok have always come through for me, providing a single point of contact, rather than having to deal with multiple vendors on my own.

If there is no other way, i'd still prefer iLok rather than being dependent on the activation servers of smaller developers.

But it's not like that, all the licenses live on your machine, there is no calling home. When we're on stage, my PC is in flight mode - no internet - and all my iLok software works perfectly well.

How long have you had your current phone? A $1000 phone should last a minimum of 5 years. Some of mine have lasted more than 7.

Hopefully not, if you hope for your music to have any longevity. We still play songs live we wrote last Century and still use most of teh sam einstruments we used on them when we first transferred them to our PCs.

I find it a bit weird to convince yourself this is worth $100 (on sale!) when TAL Noisemaker and U-he’s Tyrell N6 are free.

N6 isn't worth paying for. It sounds nice enough but is extremely limited. TAL synths are just about the most over-rated things I can think of. I bought TAL-pha when it was cheap, just to see what all the fuss was about, and I've never found a use for it.

That shows up really obviously in the quality of the factory patches. There are so many usable sounds, right out of the box, that you just know you're going to use their synths a lot from your first hour with them.

We finally delivered our new album this week, so I can spend a bit of time with these things. We're determined to maintain our new-found momentum - we've never released albums in consecutive years before - so I'm really looking forward to seeing where they can take us.

I was playing with Anthem and Opal at my son's school the other day in their production studio. Lucky for me it (anthem) didn't do much for me I made a pretty decent chord stab sound and a electric piano-ish patch. Also a couple decent pads. Not a bit of it made me want to come back to either synth on my own time. Still staying way off the UAD wagon for the foreseeable future.

I said more or less the same. I even prefer a hardware dongle vs machine ID. I wasn't talking about cloud or similar systems at all. When talking about activation servers and smaller devs, i meant it more long term, not short term.
