Buying Mac Mini just for Logic...

Anyone tempted? I've always said Logic would be the only reason I'd buy a Mac, and this is a pretty reasonable way to do it.

I'm assuming from the Sculpture thread going on that it could run Logic no problem, so I guess I would run just the program from the Mac and hook up my networked PC for all my plugins using one of those plugin-network-thingies.

If apple could be convinced to revive their PC-Mac crossgrades, they'd sell a few thousand extra units, I'm sure.

I'm still plugging away with v5.5 on PC...

Whaddyall think?

Nope but I'd be tempted to buy one to get MAX/MSP and keep PACE off the DAW...

hmmm.. would it be powerful enough you think? has it been trialled and tested in a music making environment?

or better, do you think they have build it with musicians in mind as well as simple home users?

Yes, I've been thinking about this for the last two days... But I guess I'm so used to using everything in real time that I would feel I've wasted my money
If I ever buy a mac (somehow i doubt this will happen), it has to be a step onward, not backward.

it's only a G4 and I think you need a G5 to get the best out of Logic 7.. only 333MHz (PC2700) Ram as well and the frontbus is bloody slow (167MHz system bus)

I think it might be a waste of money

sorry to say but this looks like just an other Apple rip-off based on old and slow components

I don't think the Mini would make a very good Logic host.

Well, its on a rough par with the G4 powerbook specs and there's plenty of folk happy to use them onstage...

HI

I went over to the OSX forum earlier and judging by the current state of Logic V7 I would say you have to be a masochist to use Logic in it's current crash 'a' lulabye state,

Reports coming out are suggesting that Sculpture makes Zeta look tame on cpu cycles and even the new drum gizzmo is reportedly 'flaky'.

I am an EX Logic user and have seriously considered going 'Mac' after being 'distressed' by 'SXV3' but at least that only crashes (for me) a couple of times a day - shit, in one report Logic crashed without a plug-in in sight, in another it crashed 7 times in 5 hours - lol, and this is an program designed by Apple for Apple computers!

Anyone considering a move over owes it to themselves to go on over to the OSX site and check out the situation - I recently bought a PC that is giving me some grief but this is put into 'acceptable' perspective by whats going on with Logic V7.

OR

Maybe I just read the wrong posts?

with Logic 7?

I wouldn't trust it myself.. wasn't there a test of Logic 7 that compared it's performance on a G4 and G5? G4 crawled to a stop in no time. Logic 7 has been optimised for the new G5 chips after all, which in Apple terms means the others are pretty much f**ked and better upgrade and fill the pockets a bit further

I think it's just a smaller version of the Cube and they're trying to take advantage of the iPod hype.. everyone things they're going to get the best thing since sliced bread but get an old cube that's been squased for renewed fortune

Not sure, but would Apple really f**k over the rather predominant powerbook-toting laptop-muso crowd?

Anyways, there's always Garageband 2 isnt there ;)

I'd be tempted if they weren't taking the piss with the exchange rate.
"Apple expects the Mac mini to sell for £339 in the UK and $499 in the US."
Kiss my chuddies you f**king crook.

The extra £40 is for the English language version of OSX...

That'd still be about £35 they owe me. How are they shipping it, hand carried by Jobs' concubines?

I use Logic 7 with a dual 1 gig mirror door and have no problems. None with my 1 gig powerbook. However Sculpture sucks the life out of the PB. It's even a little heavy on the desktop. Much more it seems than even Spectrasonics, so I never even use it. Not worth the CPU to me.
