I don't understand the Browser thing in 13 - I used to love 'favourites' (eg collection of reverbs etc) but nowadays largely ignore the browser. I'm actually wondering if I'm missing something; it has never occurred to me to browse by patch (except within a single instrument)? Presumably lots of people do actually find this new browser a useful feature?? Maybe I'm not using it right?

Browser and research features are just the trend of the day in all DAWs, Reason included. Computing tools are very powerfull + there’s never been so many patches and synths / FX , so finding the « one sound » you want as quikly as possible is the most important thing.
I prefer to be « intimate » with synths and try to build m’y sound so I don’t care about all those tags

I have no interest in tags. It feels like I’m filling out a form to apply for a sound. Categories/folders are more than enough for me. And when I’m making patches, I don’t want to waste time deciding if they're mellow, dark, soft, lush or whatever. Seems like a huge task to maintain and if you don't it will quickly be no point in having them.
Or maybe I just don't get it either

Am I right in saying that the browser only searches amongst Reason instruments and effects? I seem to be one of the few who actually finds the Reason sequencer very intuitive (with the caveat that it could definitely be improved etc). So I tend to mostly use third party VSTs - for which the browser doesn't work as far as I can see?

The browser only searches for patches of instruments and effects of Reason and rack extensions, as well as samples and Refills. To search for VST, and instruments and effects of Reasons there is a separate tab Devices(left of Browser tab), where there is also a search, categories (which can be customized), tags (you can create your own tags) and a list of favorites.Gamono wrote: Fri Jun 13, 2025 11:07 am Am I right in saying that the browser only searches amongst Reason instruments and effects? Very happy with this update. Version 13 feels very very smooth at this point. Well done on this one RS!

Even though I am a Reason user, I would say no to that. Getting the perpetual license will only get you all the basic instruments and effects that come stock. Most of those, although very good, have great alternatives in the VST world. Some even for free (Odin is basically a VST version of Thor).fedexnman wrote: Sat Sep 20, 2025 8:44 pm Do you guys think getting Reason 13 just to use as a rack in another host is worth $199 ??? They are having a Sale right now til September 28th .
However, there are several pretty unique instruments only available as Rack Extension, like Objekt, Algoritm, Friktion, Zero Hybrid, Viking-2, Oberon, just to name a few. If you want access to those, the current sale could get you there, but understand that all those Rack Extensions must be additionally bought, and they are not cheap. Of course, buying stuff during sales does help a little.
From my perspective, the subscription option is better value for money (even though I hate subscriptions personally) if only looking to use the rack plugin in another DAW. The subscription does bring all the Reason extensions that you otherwise need to buy (but no third-party developed Rack Extensions). You can see here what's included in what (under Features -> Reason Rack devices): https://www.reasonstudios.com/get-reason

You get a lot of good stuff for the money, especially at that price and the whole hardware style wiring up of devices is great.
I suppose it depends on your budget and what you need, but it’s got a unique way of working that won’t disappoint and will give you a shed load of new sounds.
I’ve been using it for 25 years as a host/sequencer and have loved it, but it is getting a bit buggy now. With some reluctance, I’m currently moving to reaper and to using it as a plugin. I’m hoping the bugs are due to its VST hosting implementation.
If there’s a demo version, give it a whirl before shelling out, like I say, I love the hardware style wiring things up, but it’s probably a bit of a gimmick for some I suppose, and may not be for you.

Agreed, and I would say that if there is one argument for getting the license for the rack plugin, it is getting access to the Combinator-2 functionality (but you will hate the fact you can't use VST plugins in the combinators).
I moved in the exact opposite direction (from Reaper to Reason DAW) and couldn't be happier about it
