Hi guys - I'm currently rage-quitting all my Waves plugins and I desperately need a Vocal Rider, then I stumbled across Nectar 4 Advanced and saw that it has it + a lot more to simplify my vocal processing.

My question is how are Izotope as a company regarding OS updates? Are they like Waves that you have to do a paid update every time you want to move to a newer macOS, or do they keep older versions compatible along with newer versions?

I just don't want to get stuck in another Waves WUP-like hell ever again :dog:

versions stay compatible over some time (altho i always update when they have new versions). like waves, there's an app to manage your plugins, updates, etc.

i tried to quit waves, but decided to keep reel ADT (there's a whole thread here about it). i figure, if i really want to use something, i can just use it.

fwiw, izotope now go thru native instruments.....

I rarely see Izotope stuff updated. (Although the Ozone EQ got an update through NI the other day. )

Every year, a new version is released (which doesn't support older versions) and it comes at a cost.

If you're looking for something that offers continuous updates at no extra cost and is backward compatible with older projects, check out Melda.

There's also a plugin called i think Mautovolume, that is like Vocal rider

you do know that you don't have to update just because there is an update? you can still run the plugins you're running now, and the sky won't fall. lots of ppl i work with run older plugins, and everyone gets their work done

Eventually, your OS will run out of security updates and if your PC is connected to the internet, you really shouldn't keep using it unless you're fine with being complicit in criminal activity.

If you're on MacOS, every update will break a bunch (if not all) of your plugins. So unless you get an update, you you can't keep using those plugins.

But if you're talking Windows, you're right.

I still have the Izotope Product Portal, and it still works. It just updated Neutron and something else the other day.

Yeah, I was actually considering Melda. It's a solid alternative. But Nectar would consolidate a bunch of functions I am using into one + lots of stuff I maybe find useful. It's a plugin just made for vocals after all.

But you have a great point. Maybe it's better to have all things separate.

I never found Nectar to be that great, but that's almost certainly just me. I have an Eventide plug-in (and a couple of others) I like better for what Nectar would do.

But as @osiris mentioned, updates are rare. I have 5 or 6 iZotope products, and almost all of them have only been updated once or twice in the 6 to 12 (or so) years I've had them. Then again, I haven't had any serious problems with them, and there have only been two new(er) versions of Windows during that time.

Ironically, my iZotope product manager (whatever it's called) no longer works, and hasn't for a few years. But it's not that difficult to download the plug-ins manually...once every two or three years.

It's a fact that I had zero plugins "break" in the move from Mac OS 13 to 14, or 14 to 15. That's as much as I can recall with certainty. The last thing I remember that there was no help for was Kore 2, because NI Service Center couldn't deal after an OS update, ca. 2018.

The term for what that post is is <a canard>.

I have things that predate x64 (some by quite a bit) that, because the developer made it so, still work in the up til a couple days ago most recent iteration, and are native Apple Silicon.

When a plugin no longer works in the OS, it means that the developer didn't continue development for the platform. The OS breaking anything is the wrong way of looking at this. It's not the developers of the OS's problem to ensure plugins work or not.

Of course. Saying that all plugs break with every MacOS update is a total myth.

90% is just fine. I had to update my studio computer two iterations, from 13 to 15 and the only things that broke was Waves and Fabfilter, but Fabfilter always puts out updates so that was fixed in minutes. Waves on the other hand... ugh... damn, I like their stuff, but man their way of making business is so predatory.
