I know I can do this in Bitwig's FX Grid, but I wondered if there were any VST effects (not instrument) plugins out there that do Phase Modulation of two audio signals. Ideally phase modulating the input signal with the sidechain signal.

Does anyone know of such a thing?

Answering my own question, it looks like Kilohearts Phase Distortion plugin does exactly what I wanted!

Don‘t know, how many sense that makes. I mean for good results you need two audio signals with the exactly same frequenz (or ratio) to stay harmonic, and if they are kind of synced (zerocrossings) the results should be also better, than if they are not phase aligned at all. It‘s easier to get it in a instrument plugin, than with two external audio sources.

I am not 100% sure, but it might be possible with MeldaProduction MXXX to combine two audio streams and FM/PM them with each other. At least with MSoundFactory it‘s possible. MXXX is kind of the Fx part. Not very cheap though.

May be not quite what you’re looking for but deserves to look at…

Anyone know what steps I need to take to be as excited as this guy is, about anything at all

Yes, totally agree.
He should left the plugin talks by itself…

It means I can run two sequences, one for the carrier and one for the modulator, and using the relative pitches of the two notes, I can control the phase modulation on a step by step basis. I'm playing with this now and it's great fun!

Most implementations of this just perform bipolar modulation of a relatively simple delay line. Or there will be a sine wave carrier that can have its phase modulated by whatever signal. Without some kind of fundamental pitch tracking, the phase of an arbitrary audio signal is only a relative value.

I'm really just looking to replicate what I have in hardware as FM Aid.

Ah, would have helped to lead with this! FM Aid only does phase modulation when the input signal is a sawtooth wave of exactly the right magnitude. (Hence the trimmer screw on the front panel.) It then applies a analogue "modulo" (wraparound) function so when another signal is added it acts as phase shift.

If it doesn't have to be exact, you can get similar effects by mixing two signals through a wavefolder.
