I just came back to this thread to post that. When I wanted to get a high end interface to last forever I chose RME over Metric Halo on the off chance I ended up switching to windows, 20 odd years ago. In 2025 Metric Halo have an upgrade kit for older firewire devices to TB, USB4. RME are great, but there's no upgrade path here. I'm OK with being on Sequoia for a long time I guess, I have a 2013 Mac Pro to program the FF800 for stand alone, but ADAT only offers 8 in and out... [Side note, besides being Mac only, MH have a terrible web page, great products though]dayjob wrote: Sun Sep 28, 2025 5:03 pmseems you've gotten a reply:machinesworking wrote: Sun Sep 28, 2025 12:01 am FYI I posted about this in the RME forums today, Hopefully we get an answer. The FF does work with Thunderbolt adapters, but even that no longer works now. You can keep using it with Sequoia, noone's forcing you to update.

It also cements the death of firewire that RME are so quick to say it's a done deal, don't upgrade.

apple doing apple things. I had a FF800 ages ago and used it forever. eventually sold it when i got a mac w/o FW port as i saw the writing on the wall. coincidentally RME was having a sale on the UFX+ at the time that was huge. so, what i got for the FF800 + the sale was pretty reasonable. no regrets. I use it connected via USB.machinesworking wrote: Sun Sep 28, 2025 6:19 pm It also cements the death of firewire that RME are so quick to say it's a done deal, don't upgrade.
it's a shame apple is killing FW. i try to make sure anything i get is future proof w/various connection options or at least USB.
i wonder if there is some dongle scenario that will work going forward? legacy systems being around and in use is nice... better than being recycled or landfilled.

On the plus side, Apple apparently fixed a bug causing kernel panics on M4 Macs when using certain NI software, Reaktor in particular.
Other than that, I haven’t noticed anything notable, everything is working fine so far. Live, Push, tons of VST3 and M4L plugins, same as before.
