The Usual Suspects Announce Roland JP-8080 Emulator (The Real Deal)

Any patents that were tied to JP8k have long since expired. Emulation is fair game. Decapping CPUs is not illegal and since it's an electronic circuit, it cannot be covered by patents, so Roland cannot sue for someone reverse engineering how the chips themselves work.
It's completely legally in the clear.

Great work once again.
Any info yet on the CPU hit compared to their other emulations? Most of them are pretty good on my machine, the Nord one I can only run four instances of.

No details yet. The demo they posted has 32 instances going, so it stands to reason it's less CPU intensive than current DSP563 emulators.

32 instances, or 32 audio tracks?EvilDragon wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 5:20 pm No details yet. The demo they posted has 32 instances going, so it stands to reason it's less CPU intensive than current DSP563 emulators.

Is that running on the connected network thing? 32 instances. I realize these guys are devs with high power computers but I can barely run 3 emus on my i5 before it starts smoking.

Because of this ugly GUI? Hard to believe.Markus Krause wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 3:18 pmFact is: Back in the year 2004 JunoX was removed from the market.osiris wrote: Fri Oct 10, 2025 12:24 pm I don't think Roland will take issue. I won't say why. I'm pretty sure they won't.
Roland's lawyers had taken action against reFX. Reason: The 'look and feel' of the product and the 'name' would be too similar. JunoX was replaced with Vanguard.

It is what Roland's lawyers essentially had written back in the year 2004. Mike (the owner of reFX) removed the product from the market quickly as things can get very very expensive if you get sued.

I remember that. But it wasn't designed by Michael. Some upstart hotshot kid was behind it. Wonder whatever happened to him.
THIS MUSIC HAS BEEN MIXED TO BE PLAYED LOUD SO TURN IT UP

Regarding the firmware, surprisingly, the JP 8080 firmware is nowhere to be found on the Roland website.
However, the JP 8000 firmware is still available.
It's hard to understand why it's still the JP 8000 firmware and not the 8080 firmware.
There were far more patches and performance improvements on the JP 8080.
