Yeah, so it's hardware only, just like I suspected. "ARC IN-Ear." $250. No software equivalent or ARC X integration.
I guess the rationale IK is using to justify it is that their headphone amplifier provides a consistent platform that they can calibrate to, sort of like how the ARC MEMS mic provides a consistent measurement platform that they can calibrate the ARC software to.
But in reality, I don't think the differences in the headphone output from one device to another is so great that they couldn't have just included the headphone profiles in ARC X and it would have been perfectly usable, the way every other room correction software already does. In the end it's really just all about charging the same willing group of customers twice for essentially the same product.
I'll just stick with the headphone profile I made myself with ARC. I'll just have to redo it for ARC X, since it doesn't support old profiles. It's pretty easy to do: just make a dummy head and stick the mic inside where the ear would be, then put the headphones over it and capture. You only need one side. You can just ball up a bunch of t-shirts with some masking tape. The results are just as good as the built-in profiles found in any correction software that I've tried. No doubt it would sound the same as ARC In-Ear, too. I was just hoping IK would provide the profile for ARC X so I wouldn't have to do it again myself.
