How is it doing the modulation? it sounds like ring modulation but I can't figure out how that pad is being made? Even unpiccking all the modulation

Playing around with the mod page, it looks like it's mainly the interaction between
the 1st mod - Env.1 to Freq., the 4th mod - Track 2 - Freq.,
the Filter mode - 2 Notch + 1Low, and having the Resonance maxed out.
Play around with those parameters and you'll get lots of variations on what you're hearing.
You can also lose the effect if you turn the Freq. knob up too much.
For extra added weirdness, click on the sync button and play around with (or add a mod to) both oscillator's frequencies. Mod 3 already has Track1 to VCO1 frequency, but it's a small amount and doesn't add much to the sound without sync on.
Everything on the M12 interacts with everything else, so when you're doing a complicated patch it's easy to lose track of what you've already done.
It's one of my favorite rabbit holes.
