Runciter, the filter module from the Uhbik bundle, can sound raw and gnarly a little bit like a Sherman, from what I remember. It's not an emulation, but you may find a similar overall vibe.

Also, be sure to check Inear Display Cruelle and Regressif, for brutal filtering devices to abuse. Not Sherman clones either, but similar filtering/distorting/modulated mangling tools.

I'm not sure what a tape emulation plugin has to do with a Filterbank emulation, but that is quite possibly the best advertising I've ever seen for a plugin.

It seems like Inear has ceased operations and is no longer selling either of those.

Hi there,

I was trying to build a Plug Data version based on my Bitwig patch, but I am far from fluent in PD/Plug Data and there are heaps of issues with compatibility for compiling and eventually trying to make a portable VST version.

My most recent attempts in Bitwig (4.2.1 of my preset) has been carefully compared against my actual Sherman Filterbank for character and response. My SFB2 is nearly 20 years old and I think there are also some curious age features which are showing up. The preset I have built is more a starry-eyed attempt at a related result (never meant to be an approved copy) in Bitwig rather than trying to directly model the actual unit. I have tried implementing clock-bleed at very low cutoff frequencies, but took it out in the more recent versions.

I have added multiple layers of gain and saturation in my current preset and am finding that like the hardware it responds very differently as the input signal changes. My efforts have also drifted some as I have added somethings which are not on the original SFB2 - a Bandpass sweep response inspired by the Rodec Restyler.

I might have another go in VCV Rack, but for now I am keen to make music using the colourful grit that the preset I've built is able to add.

If there are questions about my efforts I am happy to discuss them with you all.
Regards,
Chris (AmbientSpace)

Sherman Filterbank emulation when? :D

I'm not a fan of this channel, YMMV and all that, but, this is a discussion with Herman Gillis for those interested.

That interview informed quite a few of my choices to include separate saturation stages in my preset to colour the input signal, each of the filter outputs and the final output (along with a little clipping). Herman is quite the interesting individual and I really like how he describes his process as being about finding musical solutions vs technical perfection. I also like how in earlier interviews you can hear his chickens making all kinds of noise in the background.

I also tried adding switched cap clock noise (the Secret Sauce reference is a hold over from when that was in there), but it was too extreme - a combination of quantising the signal based on the cutoff frequency and injecting a little random noise into it for extra grit (this is now part of the colour controls in my Seal Eggs delay preset - inspired from Intellijel's Sealegs). Putting the switched cap noise in also massively increased the CPU demand of the preset.

I will be the first to say that what I have built is not a Sherman Filterbank, but is very heavily inspired and informed from using my own. In actual fact, I have learned more about how to use my hardware unit by building the preset than in the previous years of use.

I wanted to have presets that I could easily save and since my audio interface failed I have been entirely in the box for the past 2 years. I can listen to my SFB2 on my mixer, but can't bring the audio back into my PC to do anything with it now.

This conversation has caused me to root about and make some changes so the filter cutoff is a bit more faithful in v4.3.0 - will post in a day or two.

I've also just tried making copies of the SVF nodes in my preset so that the filters are passed through a second filter. I can't find anything which provides a reference to the Bitwig SVF being 1 pole or 2 pole (1st or 2nd order) filters. The spec sheet for the LTC1060 shows that it is a 2nd order filter, and such has a much steeper response. This is what has prompted me to double the filter chain. The results are much more aggressive than my SFB2, but are excitingly unstable and quite grippy and ripping of the audio. Here's a link to the filter IC: https://www.analog.com/media/en/technic ... 1060fb.pdf

I might end up publishing v4.3.0 as a reasonable facsimile of my own SFB2 and v4.4.0 as a "stronger" version.

Anyhow - if someone uses my preset I'd love to hear their feedback.

For those who might be interested I have continued to make some balancing and tuning adjustments of my Bitwig preset while comparing against my hardware SFB2. There are some curiosities about my hardware unit where I can hear some sounds which I can only describe as "old transistor" where the signals are a bit variable. Interesting.

Here the latest iteration of my Sherman Filterbank emulation preset in action and building on the continued tuning against my hardware unit. In this example I have added a second stage of filters into the signal chain to see what happens. These are blended into the mix using the Extreme macro. It's a bit of a wild demo as I wanted to explore as many sounds as I could jam into 2 minutes.

Keen eyed observers will note that I have added a Response macro and this adjusts the averaging that is applied to the envelope follower that is controlled with the Amt 1&2 -/+ controls. At one extreme you can wibble on nearly every oscillation, and at the other you can get a nice drifting response.

You are welcome to play with it too and you can get a free copy from my website at: https://www.ambientspace.com/technical- ... filterbank
While built in Bitwig Studio v4.0, this demo is shown in Bitwig Studio v6b4.

Best Sherman emulation I have heard so far @12.20sec.
