Valhalla Space modulator (free, or was) or the free melda stuff. I've never found that getting good modulation effects was particularly tricky. You're basically modulating a delay and anything more than that is just a byproduct of how this is implemented. I have usually preferred a clean digital version of a phaser over analog allpass based implementations. Having good control over the base frequency and the modulation are the key elements for myself.

Underdog? If you don't neccessarily need a photorealistic GUI I suggest tp have look at Hofa's System extension PhaserChorusFlanger:
https://hofa-plugins.de/shop/system/pha ... usflanger/
Soundwise amongst the best and even already without the System host very versatile... and it even includes a playable tape-flanger.

I mean, if we're truly talking *underdog*, I liked the stereo preset in FASoft n-Track Studio's flanger effect 27 years ago.

UVI Phasor is pretty good (though I didn't keep it, unlike Thorus and Sparkverb, which I did keep).
I also like Melda's free modulation effects; they are all good (MCharmVerb is even my go-to reverb).

What is "underdog" is the world of FX? Why would one want such a thing?
I like the Uhbik P and Uhbik F. And most of the already mentioned versions that i own. I've met few phase shifters or flangers that i didn't like. My favourite virtuals were the ones i made in Reaktor.
In hardware landia my fav out of the box were Electric Mistress and A/DA flangers and Mutron II, Bad Stone, and Bi Phasor. My favorite favorites were my modified Electric Mistress and modified Mutron II. Once again, there was rarely one of either in my many crates of FX that i actually disliked.
forgot to mention another all time favorite flanger- my Tascam reel to reels.

I mean Phasers especially are pretty standardised as a plugin type. Uhbik P, Melda Phaser, Kilohearts phaser, most likely whatever phaser came with your DAW are all the same plugin on some level other than some parameter differences. I can't really see how you could have an "underdog"phaser when the implementation and DSP is mostly the same around the board outside of analog modelled phasers. If that's what you are after i would look into Eventide Instant Phaser MKII or D16 Fazortan 2, or if you want to DIY quirky phasers, look into Soundtoys PhaseMistress

If by underdog you mean coming from an indie developer that is known to create high-quality plugins, maybe https://sixthsample.com/aurbit/ is to your liking.

If you like the definitive phaser sound of french house (most notably Daft Punk), you need none other than Ensoniq's DP/4 effects processor. In DAW environment there is only one plug-in that emulates the phaser module accurately: Dusty Devices' Phaser-DDL.

A great new flanger from Audyo Engineering, only 12 euros. Great stuff imo, big fan of their Twin Pitch plugin as well.

+1 on Phaser DDL. Inexpensive with a distinct sound.Julion wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 11:10 am If you like the definitive phaser sound of french house (most notably Daft Punk), you need none other than Ensoniq's DP/4 effects processor. Safari pedals has a Hawk Phaser you can get free with a code (unless it already expired). Search Bedroom producer's blog for the code. I'm not one for phasers or flangers but it sounds pretty good on guitar. Only caveat, other than having to register and getting flooded with adverts is all of their plugins are bundled in the download file which is over a GB.
