I am sad to learn of the passing of Anthony Jackson, one of the most remarkable musicians to ever play the bass guitar. He is recognized as the inventor of the 6 string contrabass guitar (with low B and high C strings), and for bringing incredible ferocity, sensitivity, and sheer gusto to his performances.
Anthony first came to notice for his outrageously funky plectrum and flanger-driven work on The O'Jays' "For the Love of Money", and through his career played with musicians like Al DiMeola, Michel Camilo, Simon & Garfunkel, Michel Petruciani, and Hiromi.
Aside from bassists like James Jamerson and Jack Casady, some of Anthony's biggest influences were composers Oliver Messiaen and Camille Saint-Saëns, evident in his angular lines and ability to always add surprising elements to the music at hand.
