The legality part is interesting, though. I too would be hesitant to use it in a piece of music. (Not that I'd earn anything, lol.) Honestly for that we have tons and tons of synths that can do supersaws these days. Yes, they behave differently, but listeners don't care. You won't be next Rank 1, so why try to emulate them. ...or if you want, you have other emulations. But man, for the nostalgia factor? Just ... playing those old songs on the original synth's software? That's a dream. I won't pirate, but god damn, I'm tempted to.
...this was a bit different talk in Virus case, as it doesn't seem Access/Kemper will release any new synth or softsynth anytime soon. But here, Roland is still very much active. I have no idea why there was no original JP8000/JP8080 vst clone over the years. They should have done the same thing they did with the ROMplers. Even though I don think these emulate the chip inside. Maybe that's the problem. It's just hard to execute.
Honestly you know what would be the perfect move from Roland? To go to Usual Suspects, buy the chip emulation from them and offer a legal version of JE-8086 with the original firmware pre-loaded. (And maybe with an optional D/A model on the output.) Because even if they release Arturia-style emulation, the chip emulation will always be closer as it's literaly THE real thing. But if they work with Usual Suspect, I'm going to literally throw money at the screen. And I know a quite large comunity of middle aged OG Trance fans who will do completely the same.
Maaaan. That Airwave rendition from the demo? God damn.
That sounded better than some of the oficial remasters of the song.

@FarleyCZ - I thought of pretty much the same thing when I first heard of it. Roland doesn't need to do anything but offer a software license for the roms. They could just take money for allowing rom use if you don't have the hardware. The could just come up with a price and make money from something they're not using ... unless they are planning on something themselves?

I think they said they had approached each manufacturer and none were interested. The CPU demands would be more of a factor for an official product. I do wonder if the emulator could be optimised specifically for each rom if it were officially sanctioned.FarleyCZ wrote: Wed Oct 29, 2025 5:37 pm Honestly you know what would be the perfect move from Roland? I heard that while being a bit on the heavier side, the Virus emulation isn't extremely CPU hungry. That's a cost of satisfied nostalgia.db3 wrote: Wed Oct 29, 2025 6:50 pm I think they said they had approached each manufacturer and none were interested. Imo every manufacturer of vintage digital synths shoul be knocking on their doors instead. Offering them the ROMs legally for a price. It would be so easy money. Usual Suspects could do a little store, have a litte cut on the ROM price.

There is a self-destructive arrogance in so-called business 'leaders' that lack
passion for the arts
common sense
financial acumen
a desire to be liked
Sadly, the music industry is flooded with such people, owning or controlling potentially great businesses. The music that will not be created due to their stubborness is a loss hard to calculate. Fortunately great alternatives exist, and are getting better

On Ostirus you can already overclock the DSP at your riskdb3 wrote: Wed Oct 29, 2025 6:50 pm I do wonder if the emulator could be optimised specifically for each rom if it were officially sanctioned.
