for what it's worth, i got GR-8 working again (partially) in Linux via WINE v9.21
the black GUI problem arose when following some ubuntu or debian advice involving a supposed fix for the WINE wayland bug. i think the bogus advice was to install "vdxk"(?) or something like that.
the advice failed and broke GR-8 completely whereas before that it functioned mostly.

the reinstatement of functionality was achieved by going into winecfg and deleting all of the DLL overrides.
there's a fancy way to do this, but I think manually works too. after that, GR-8 is mostly usable.

I can't get to the FX tab for some odd reason, but the other stuff looks odd (flickers) but still works.
Believe me, it's probably NOT a Phuturetone bug. It's a WINE bug (probably wayland), that's not likely to get fixed for a while.

But I was able to install some GR-8 presets from KVR and they sound good.
And in REAPER, I was able to switch off the GUI and use the generic interface to get to the settings. So it's usuable.

Thanks for such a nice sounding synth.
I had already used it successfully in some of my tunes, and I will again.
I'm still on Manjaro XFCE/MATE Linux for now.

No! No! No! No! No! There is already plenty of that kind of shit around. GR-8's simplicity is a big part of its attraction. If you are going to add anything to it, it should be things that enhance what's already there. e.g. Morphable HP, BP and Notch modes for the filter (like a SEM) or a pre/post filter overdrive to really push the sound. Maybe a sub-osc or per-oscillator unison. Or perhaps the ability to morph between the oscillator waveforms, like the hardware analogue UNO Synth does. Those kinds of things would be useful, digital style oscillator options would not.

To be clear, I'm pretty happy with it as is, I don't think it needs much, if any enhancement.
Ah i see, thanks.

Hello Phuturetone! I have a lot of soft synths but i always get back to the Gr-8. And speaking about update, i may have a few ideas, like self-oscilating Filter, maybe having the option of turning the Detune and Spread in Poly mode, so it can have a more analoge vibe and maybe X-Mod modulation via LFO? That would be awesome. Thanks for the awesome synth you've given us!
